Model United Nations Success

Jonathan (Year 12) has successfully participated in two of the largest Model United Nations (MUN) conferences, following a competitive interview process that awarded him his place.

The first event, LSEMUN Highschool, was a three-day conference from 15 to 17 March, hosted by the London School of Economics. This conference welcomed over 500 delegates from 20 different countries. Jonathan served as the Assistant Chairman of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime Council (UNODC). His responsibilities included organising council activities, assisting delegates in forming blocs (groups with different opinions on the discussion topics), and aiding in discussions. He also observed delegates and participated in deciding the final prize awards.

The MUN conference went extremely well! I am grateful to have been given the opportunity to chair a conference and was able to meet many like-minded and wonderful people too. I'm really thankful for the opportunity given by the LSEMUN HS committee and for the continuous support from my Head of House, Mr Hunt.

Jonathan (Year 12)

From 27 to 28 April, Jonathan took on the role of Assistant Chairman at the London International Model United Nations Highschool (LIMUN HS). LIMUN promotes cosmopolitan democracy and multilateralism. This time, Jonathan was the Assistant Director of the Commission on Science and Technology for Development (CSTD). His role was similar to his previous conference, and he was proud to be awarded Best Assistant Director at the conference.

Participating in MUN conferences allows young people to broaden their horizons on current global topics. Model UN simulations engage hundreds of thousands of students each year, helping them learn more about the principles and functioning of the UN. Many of today’s leaders in law, government, business, and the arts – including those at the UN – participated in Model UN as students.

Jonathan has previously participated in MUN conferences, but this was his first experience as a Chairman. He is currently studying A Levels in Biology, Chemistry, Maths, and Economics, and he hopes to study Medicine after School.

Jonathan values the opportunity to meet other young people from around the world, with participants flying in from as far away as Thailand. He believes MUN events provide excellent public speaking and debating experience, essential life skills for his future.

Being an Assistant Chairman was a fantastic opportunity to improve my leadership and communication skills while meeting many like-minded people. Overall, it was a wonderful experience, enabling me to be able to listen to different perspectives from people across the globe regarding world current affairs.
