I visited the Barbican Art Galley to see "Unravel: The Power and Politics of Textiles in Art". The exhibit featured 50 works made of textiles. These works were quite powerful.
There was a hand-stitched appliqué blanket titled "No chance (WHAT A YEAR)". It was made in 1999 by Tracey Emin to give voice to her feelings as a 13-year-old girl in 1977, the year a man raped her. A quilt titled "Sweven" was made in 2022 by Sanford Biggers. It draws on quilts being used as 'code' to signpost routes for enslaved freedom seekers on the Underground Railroad. There even were sculptures made of rope. "Pakshi", which means bird in Sanskrit, was made in 1985 by Mrinalini Mukherjee by twisting and knotting ropes found in local markets in New Delhi. This fascinating exhibit runs until 26 May.
