Friends are very important to us. Sometimes we just want to develop some new friendships. Here are some of the best apps for you to make new friends.
Atleto
Research shows that exercising with a friend promotes more motivation and healthier lifestyle habits. Atleto is an app that builds on this “exercise contagion (传染)” phenomenon by bringing together athletic people to take exercise and organize group activities. You can choose from over 40 sports and find your community of people who like to be in a sweat.
Friender
Studies show that we’re eager to find people similar to us. Suppose you’re sick of boring surface-level conversations. Then, Friender solves that problem quickly with an algorithm (算法) that only matches you based on your favorite activities and interests. This friend-finding app makes it easy to get into conversations that you care about. If you don’t have many hobbies to type into an app, one of the easiest ways to start is to try out new hobbies.
PawDate
Dogs are great companions, but sometimes it’s nice to talk to humans, too. This app connects pet owners to meet up at dog parks or walk with their pups. You get to set up doggie play dates and find new friends at the same time It’s a win-win.
Skout
Skout started back in 2007 to help people make new friends. The matches are based on geographical distances and preferences. It’s perfect for meeting people while traveling, moving and entering a new chapter of life. Skout is able to discover people directly by checking into a location and seeing who else on the app is there.

B
Today, I’ve been recording an audiobook. I am excited that I have realized my life-long dream.
I will never forget at primary school I used to wait with breathless anticipation to take my turn reading out a paragraph of great works in front. At my secondary school, when students were encouraged to select and present a reading at “morning talk”, I often added my name to the list.
This was all handy background for my career in broadcasting. But, much as I enjoy hosting shows and interviewing people, I often find myself missing the simple pleasures of reading out loud. I’d thought about putting myself forward as a narrator for audiobooks. But I’m not an actor. I can’t do regional accents or play female voice. Non-fiction, then, seemed the obvious target, but I felt that such books were best read by their original authors. If it were authors’ own voice, their stories would touch me.
Recently, delivering my son’s nightly bedtime story has reawakened my love for reading out loud — highlights so far have included Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Charlotte’s Web. But I never thought I’d get the opportunity to do it professionally.
Then, last month, I was contacted by James Plunkett, writer of End State, a forthcoming book about political ideas. He had no desire to read his book out loud, but as a fan of my program, he thought I might do a reasonable job.
So, I’ve spent this week in a studio, simply reading stuff out loud. And I’m LOVING IT!
Mind you, it’s an entirely unexpected experience. It’s disheartening when the recording needs to be stopped because I’ve just carelessly skipped over a “the”, or had to clear my throat, or catch my breath. I’ve also learned how many words I’ve been mispronouncing my entire life: behavioural is BE-HAYVE-YOU-RAL, not BE-HAYVE-EE-AH-RUL.
Though tackling this 339-page book doesn’t turn out to be that easy, I’ve found the whole process awesome, and hope this becomes the first of many.
4. What does the author want to show by mentioning his experiences at school
A. The power of dreaming.
B. His love for reading aloud.
C. The impact of schooling.
D. His talent for reading.
5. What can we learn about the author from paragraph 3
A. He regrets being a TV host.
B. He has no taste for non-fiction.
C. He has rich acting experience.
D. He is aware of his disadvantages.
6. Why could the author get the job as a narrator
A. He was specifically invited.
B. He applied for it in person.
C. He loved reading bedtime stories.
D. He had a big crowd of fans.
7. What does the author think of being a narrator
A. Demanding but enjoyable.
B. Risky but fruitful.
C. Tiring but stress-free.
D. Boring but rewarding.
B 5. D 6. A 7. A
根据第二段“I will never forget at primary school I used to wait with breathless anticipation to take my turn reading out a paragraph of great works in front. At my secondary school, when students were encouraged to select and present a reading at “morning talk”, I often added my name to the list.(我永远不会忘记上小学时,我总是屏息以待,等着轮到我朗读面前的一段名著。在我上中学的时候,当学校鼓励学生在“晨间谈话”中选择并朗读一篇阅读材料时,我经常把自己的名字加到名单上)”可知,作者小学时,经常期待着能轮到自己阅读作品,在中学时经常把自己的名字添加到朗读者的名单中,由此推知,作者提及在上学期间的经历是为了表明自己对朗读的热爱。故选B项。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“I’d thought about putting myself forward as a narrator for audiobooks. But I’m not an actor. I can’t do regional accents or play female voice.(我曾想过让自己成为有声读物的旁白。但我不是演员。我不会讲地方口音,也不会扮演女声)”可知,作者意识到自己还有很多的不足。故选D项。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段“Then, last month, I was contacted by James Plunkett, author of End State, a forthcoming book about political ideas. He had no desire to read his book out loud, but as a fan of my program, he thought I might do a reasonable job.(然后,上个月,詹姆斯·普伦基特联系了我,他是即将出版的一本关于政治理念的书《终结状态》的作者。他不想大声朗读他的书,但作为我的节目的粉丝,他认为我可能会做得不错)”可知,作者受到《终结状态》的作者詹姆斯·普伦基特的专门邀请,所以成为一名朗读者的。故选A项。
根据倒数第二段中的“It’s disheartening when the recording needs to be stopped because I’ve just carelessly skipped over a “the”, or had to clear my throat, or catch my breath.(当我不小心跳过了一个“the”,或者不得不清嗓子,或者喘口气时,录音需要停止,这是令人沮丧的)”可知,在录制过程中出现一点点问题都会重新录制,说明这种工作要求很高,结合尾段中的“Though tackling this 339-page book doesn’t turn out to be that easy, I’ve found the whole process awesome, and hope this becomes the first of many.(虽然处理这本339页的书并不容易,但我发现整个过程很棒,希望这成为许多书中的第一)”可知,作者觉得尽管不是容易,但是这个过程感觉很棒。 故选A项。
C
Bred (培育) to be sweeter, today’s cherries, bananas and apples taste different than they used to but not necessarily better. Among fruit farmers, the word “quality” is now routinely used as a standard for “high in sugar”, though firmness, color and size are also considerations. In a recent study about ways to increase the sweetness of fruit using “molecular (分子的) approaches”, a group of plant scientists wrote that, in general, the sugar content of many fruits are now higher than before owing to continuous selection and breeding. Modern apple varieties, the scientists stressed, were on average sweeter than older ones.
The sweetness of fruit depends not just on how it is bred but also on growing conditions, yield (产量) and harvest. The lead researcher, Sugiura, said, “If you could taste an apple harvested 30 years ago, you would feel the difference.” He believed that modern apples are picked so early that even if they are bred for sweetness, they often don’t develop their full character. The fragrance (香味) never develops in fruit that is harvested too early.
Jim Cooper, an apple farmer in England, is regretful to admit the fact that many people will never taste the “strawberry hint” in a really ripe Pearmain, a type of heritage apple. Although sweeter fruit has gained great popularity, the older generation still miss the fruit’s taste in their childhood.
But the sweetness of modern fruit is not without its problems, especially for people with diabetes (糖尿病), who have to reduce their intake of higher-sugar fruits. Fruit that is bred sweeter also tends to be lower in the chemicals that make it healthy. Considering health, maybe the real problem with modern fruit is that it has become yet another sweet thing in a world with sugar. Even grapefruits, which used to be quite bitter, are sometimes now as sweet as oranges. If you’ve never tasted a sour cherry, how can you fully appreciate a sweet one
8. In what aspect are many fruits different from before
A. Bright color. B. Soft skin.
C. Sugar content. D. High yield.
9. Why did Sugiura express dissatisfaction with the present fruits
A. They are bred too early. B. They are losing a good taste.
C. They taste so sweet. D. They need a higher yield.
10. What is Cooper’s attitude towards modern fruit breeding
A. Critical. B. Doubtful.
C. Favorable. D. Uncaring.
11. What is the best title for the text
A. Sweeter Doesn’t Mean Better
B. How to Breed Fruits for Sweetness
C. Modern Fruits No Longer Taste the Same as Before
D. Breeding Sweet Fruits Improves the Quality of Fruits
C 9. B 10. A 11. A
根据第一段中“Bred to be more sweeter, today’s cherries, bananas and apples taste different than they used—to but not necessarily better. (如今的樱桃、香蕉和苹果经过了更甜的培育,尝起来与过去不同,但并不一定更好)”以及“Modern apple varieties, the scientists stressed, were on average sweeter than older ones. (科学家们强调,现代苹果品种平均比老苹果更甜)”可知,现代水果的糖分含量不同以往。故选C。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“He believed that modern apples are picked so early that even if they are bred for sweetness, they often don’t develop their full character. The fragrance (香味) never develops in fruit that is harvested too early. (他认为,现代的苹果采摘得太早,即使它们是为了甜味而培育的,它们往往也没有发育出完整的特征。过早收获的果实永远不会散发出香味。)”可知,因为现代水果失去好味道,所以Sugiura表示不满意。故选B。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“Jim Cooper, an apple farmer in England, is regretful to admit the fact that many people will never taste the “strawberry hint” in a really ripe Pearmain, a type of heritage apple. In a way, the rise of consistently sweeter fruit in our lifetimes has been a victory of plant breeding. (Jim Cooper是英国的一名苹果农,他很遗憾地承认,许多人永远尝不到真正成熟的一种传统苹果Pearmain的“草莓味”。在某种程度上,在我们的生活中不断出现的更甜的水果还是植物育种的胜利)”可知,Cooper对现代水果育种的态度是批评的。故选A。
根据文章第一段“Bred (培育) to be sweeter, today’s cherries, bananas and apples taste different than they used to but not necessarily better.(如今的樱桃、香蕉和苹果经过了更甜的培育,尝起来与过去不同,但并不一定更好。)” 故选A。
D
The cry of the fishing cat sounds like the quack of a duck, and the rest of this midsize cat also enables it to hunt in the water. Its streamlined head is perfect for moves in the mangrove swamps (红树林沼泽地) and wetlands of South and Southeast Asia, and its pointy ears even fold (折叠) down when it jumps into deep water. The short and strong tail helps control its direction. The extra-thick coat keeps it warm and dry while swimming.
“I found fishing cats to be very ingenious,” says Tiasa Adhya, co-founder of The Fishing Cat Project, a research and conservation group based in eastern India. Her research recently showed that the animal has two methods of catching fish. In deep waters, the cat stays still on the banks for hours before jumping into the water for the kill. In shallow (浅的) waters, though, the cat actively drives the fish out of their hiding places by moving about with heavy steps.
Now the fishing cat is facing another challenge: humans. The world has lost almost 90 percent of its wetlands since the 1700s, with Asia suffering the greatest loss. These days, industrialized fish farming, pollution and other human behaviors have destroyed the living condition of freshwater fish and set fishing cats against farmers, as the hungry cats steal farmed fish, and the farmers get even with them (报复). Once found along river systems from Pakistan to Vietnam, the cats have disappeared from large areas of their range.
Researchers are testing new methods, including the commercial launch (商业化推出) of a type of native rice variety. Depending on nutrients (营养物) washed in by rains rather than on chemicals, the rice creates living space for the fishing cat and its food. The idea is that in healthy lakes where there is plenty to feed fishing cats and fishermen alike, killings will be unnecessary. “Nobody takes a loss,” Adhya explains, “when somebody takes a fish.”
12. What does the author want to explain about fishing cats in the first paragraph
A. Why they moved to South and Southeast Asia.
B. What helps them swim well in the water.
C. What pushes them to live with ducks.
D. Why they love staying in the water.
13. What does the underlined word “ingenious” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Friendly. B. Alarmed. C. Clever. D. Lazy.
14. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. The battle between fishing cats and humans.
B. The decision to protect freshwater fish.
C. The importance of stopping pollution.
D. The method of increasing wetlands.
15. What can we infer about the new method mentioned in the last paragraph
A. It will do some harm to the environment.
B. It will create a win-win situation.
C. It will increase food production.
D. It will cost a lot of money.
B 13. C 14. A 15. B

根据文章第一段“The cry of the fishing cat sounds like the quack of a duck, and the rest of this midsize cat also enables it to hunt in the water. Its streamlined head is perfect for moves in the mangrove swamps (红树林沼泽地) and wetlands of South and Southeast Asia, and its pointy ears even fold (折叠) down when it jumps into deep water. The short and strong tail helps control its direction. The extra-thick coat keeps it warm and dry while swimming.(这只渔猫的叫声听起来像鸭子的嘎嘎声,这只中型猫的其余部分也使它能够在水中捕猎。它流线型的头部非常适合在南亚和东南亚的红树林沼泽和湿地活动,当它跳入深水时,它的尖耳朵甚至会向下折叠。短而有力的尾巴有助于控制方向。超厚的皮毛使它在游泳时保持温暖和干燥)”可知,作者在第一段中主要介绍了渔猫能够在水中行动的先天有利条件。故选B。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据下文“Her research recently showed that the animal has two methods of catching fish. In deep waters, the cat stays still on the banks for hours before jumping into the water for the kill. In shallow (浅的) waters, though, the cat actively drives the fish out of their hiding places by moving about with heavy steps.(她最近的研究表明,这种动物有两种捕鱼方法。在深水中,这只猫会在岸边呆上几个小时,然后跳入水中进行杀戮。然而,在浅水区,猫会用沉重的步伐主动地把鱼赶出藏身之处)”可知,Tiasa Adhya的研究发现渔猫在面对深水和浅水时有两种不同的捕食方式,而且每一种都非常机智,因此,Adhya应该认为渔猫是“聪明的”。由此可知,划线词ingenious意为“聪明的”。故选C。
【14题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章第三段“Now the fishing cat is facing another challenge: humans. The world has lost almost 90 percent of its wetlands since the 1700s, with Asia suffering the greatest loss. These days, industrialized fish farming, pollution and other human behaviors have destroyed the living condition of freshwater fish and set fishing cats against farmers, as the hungry cats steal farmed fish, and the farmers get even with them (报复).(现在,渔猫面临着另一个挑战:人类。自18世纪以来,世界已经失去了近90%的湿地,其中亚洲的损失最为严重。如今,工业化养鱼、污染和其他人类行为破坏了淡水鱼的生存条件,并使捕鱼猫与农民对立起来,因为饥饿的猫偷走了养殖的鱼,而农民则报复了它们)”可知,这一段主要讲述了渔猫和人类之间的矛盾冲突。故选A。
根据文章最后一段“The idea is that in healthy lakes where there is plenty to feed fishing cats and fishermen alike, killings will be unnecessary. “Nobody takes a loss,” Adhya explains, “when somebody takes a fish.”(他们的想法是,在健康的湖泊里,有足够的食物喂养捕鱼的猫和渔民,杀戮是不必要的。Adhya解释说:“当有人钓到一条鱼时,没有人会觉得损失。”)”可推知,研究人员想出的新方法对渔民和渔猫都好,可以创造一个双赢的局面。故选B。

第二节(满分25分)
47. On a freezing morning of December, two police officers were patrolling(巡逻) the streets. Suddenly, the walkie-talkie (对讲机) on Alan, one of the officers, rang. “The cake shop near the City Museum has reported a burglary (窃案). Please rush to the scene immediately”, said the electronic voice.
The two policemen quickly arrived at the shop, only to find that the scene showed no sign of crimes at all. Curiously, they checked the monitor (监控器) and found that a thin woman broke open the window and climbed into the store at 5:20 a.m. Instead of searching around, she walked straight into the storage room, stole cheese, chocolate, butter and other ingredients for a cake, and then ran away down the road.
Both policemen felt quite confused about her behavior. One of the shop assistants identified the thief as Clara, a single mother who lived nearby. She had an eight-year-old boy to take care of and lived in poverty.
Moments later, the two officers arrived at Clara’s house. Bob, the other officer, pulled out a gun and was about to break in. But Alan told him to put the gun away and knocked gently.
The door opened and out came a very thin woman. From the outline of her figure, Alan recognized that she was exactly the thief. The woman, Clara, immediately understood the situation when she saw the two policemen. She buried her face in her hands and sat down on the floor.
At that very moment, a child’s voice broke the silence, “Mom, is anyone coming for my birthday Invite them in, please.”
After hearing the boy’s words, Clara stood up and begged in a low voice, “Officer, I did steal those things, but there’s nothing else I could do. It’s my baby’s birthday, and I’ve got neither job nor money. Please don’t take those things away. I’ve just used them to make him a cake.”

Looking into the woman’s teary eyes, Alan understood and walked into the house. It was poorly lit, narrow and damp. An undernourished boy came into his eyes, beaming from ear to ear while working busily with flour at hand. He looked up and saw Alan, who immediately explained, “Hey, I am Alan. I come to say Happy Birthday to you as I am patrolling this neighborhood.” The boy exclaimed in delight, “Thank you, Sir.” Alan stepped out, handed Clara a twenty dollar bill, and smiled, “Would you help me buy a nice birthday gift to your son now since I am still on duty ” Then he stated to Bob they should not arrest Clara.
Bob nodded thoughtfully and asked, “What about the things she stole ” As Alan saw Clara’s bean-pole figure gone into the distance, he answered in a firm voice, “I will help cover the loss of the shop.” On hearing this, Bob felt embarrassed, twisting and rubbing his hands over and over again seemingly to get warm in this freezing December. Finally, he gathered his courage, “Buddy, I can also help. Let me pay for them as my Christmas gift to the mother and her child.” Staring into Bob’s eyes, Alan saw the genuine kindness glistening with little soft snowflakes falling down from the sky, white and pure.

C He has rich acting experience.
D. He is aware of his disadvantages.
6. Why could the author get the job as a narrator
A. He was specifically invited.
B. He applied for it in person.
C. He loved reading bedtime stories.
D. He had a big crowd of fans.
7. What does the author think of being a narrator
A. Demanding but enjoyable.
B. Risky but fruitful.
C. Tiring but stress-free.
D. Boring but rewarding.
