Elon Falls to Hofstra at CAA Tournament

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Elon University softball team suffered a 6-0 setback to Hofstra in an elimination game at the 2024 CAA Softball Tournament on Wednesday evening, May 8 at Boseman Field.

Elon finishes its 2024 campaign at 23-29 while Hofstra improves to 22-25 to advance to the quarterfinal round.

AT THE PLATE
• The Phoenix held to five hits in its second game of the day while being handed its first shutout since a 6-0 result versus No. 7 Duke on March 5. Five different players recorded a base hit for Elon with Megan Grant, Mauri Murray, Gabi Schaal, Kaitlyn Wells and Greta Hessenthaler registering a base knock with Grant providing the only extra-base hit with a double.

IN THE CIRCLE
• Meredith Wells took the loss for Elon, falling to 2-7 on the year. The Daleville, Va., native pitched 2.1 innings and allowed three runs off six hits.
• Taylor Cherry tossed 4.2 innings in relief, allowing three runs. She also struck out four batters.

THE RUNDOWN
• The Pride took the early lead on a two-out RBI single to left field to put the Phoenix down 1-0 after the top of the first. Hofstra then added two more runs in the top of the third via an RBI on a groundout and a wild pitch to take a 3-0 advantage.
• Hofstra added some insurance runs in the top of the sixth. The Pride hit a three-run home run to double its lead to 6-0 before Elon was able to get out of the inning.
• Looking to rally, Elon got multiple base runners on in the bottom of the seventh. Hofstra set down the first two batters of the inning, but the Phoenix kept the game alive on singles from Kaitlyn Wells and Hessenthaler. Elon tried to extend the inning once more on the next at bat, but a fly out to left ended the rally with the Pride taking the 6-0 win.
