ANN ARBOR — Every story has a beginning, and every story that lasts has something that sets it apart from others like it.
According to Phil Converse, who joined the Institute for Social Research in its early days and went on to become its director, ISR’s differentiating factors were evident very early on.
ISR’s approach to social science research in its early days wasn’t just new, it was completely groundbreaking and, in some ways, controversial. In a conversation with an oral historian in the late 1990s, Converse explained how ISR’s unique work in the social sciences attracted him to a place that would become a long-term fixture in his life.
