How your MP voted on law to criminalise water bosses for sewage pollution

Labour abstained from voting on the amendment

MPs voted against an amendment to make water company bosses criminally liable for sewage spills on Wednesday evening.

The new amendment to the Criminal Justice Bill, was put forward by Liberal Democrats environment spokesman Tim Farron, to create new criminal offences for failing to meet specified performance measures to crack down on sewage spills.

If passed, senior managers in water firms would have been personally criminally liable for failing to meet performance measures, but the amendment was defeated 262 to 17 after Labour chose to abstain (204 votes).

This comes after i revealed that South West Water urged residents in a Devon town to boil their tap water before use after finding it contained traces of a highly infectious virus.

The UK Health Security Agency confirmed 22 cases of a diarrhoea-type illness caused by the waterborne parasite cryptosporidium in Brixham, a tourist hotspot in the south of the county.

You can find out who your local MP is by searching your postcode on the official Parliament website, and check how they voted below in the list below. If your MP is not on the list, it means they did not vote.

There are a number of reasons why an MP may not vote in the Commons, ranging from illness, being away on a Parliamentary visit or being paired with a member of another party who could not attend.

Some MPs may also abstain because they do not agree with the party position, but do not want to defy the party whip.

Here are all the MPs who supported and opposed the new amendment:
