Chile’s Empresas CMPC agrees a protocol with the State of Rio Grande do Sul for construction of a 2.5m tpy pulp mill in Brazil

Chile’s Empresas CMPC has announced plans for a pulp mill project in Brazil that will involve a $4bn industrial unit, $420m road infrastructure work, and $150m for the development of a port terminal in Rio Grande.
The company agreed a protocol for infrastructure works with the State of Rio Grande do Sul to build the site.
It would have an annual production capacity of bleached short fibre kraft pulp (BHKP) of up to 2.5 million tons.
Francisco Ruiz-Tagle, Chief Executive, CMPC, said: “The project, Natureza, has an integral concept that brings together industrialisation, road and port infrastructure, sustainable associative forestry, conservation and cultural promotion”.
The plant is to be built in the Rio Grande do Rio Grande do Sul municipality of Barra do Ribeiro, and located 34 kilometres from CMPC’s pulp mill in Guaíba.
CMPC added that it is also submitting requests for permits for various monitoring activities to the Fundação Estadual de Proteção Ambiental Henrique Luis Roessler (FEPAM), which are necessary to prepare the technical studies and environmental assessments.
If approved, it added the project would be developed over a period of three years.
