SJU Begins NCAA Championship Tuesday in Nevada

No. 11 Saint John's golf competes at the NCAA Division III Championship this Tuesday-Friday, May 14-17, at Boulder Creek G.C. (par 72) in Boulder City, Nev. - Live Results

THE COURSES: The Legacy G.C. (par 72) in Henderson, Nev., is scheduled to host one of the first two rounds for each of the 221 golfers and Boulder Creek G.C. will hold the other three rounds, including the final two. The courses are separated by 16 miles in the southern/southeastern suburbs of Las Vegas.

TEE TIMES: The Johnnies are scheduled to play with the defending national champions, No. 3 Carnegie Mellon (Pa.), and Whitman (Wash.) on Tuesday and Wednesday. The trio starts off No. 1 at 7:45 a.m. PT Tuesday at The Legacy G.C. Wednesday's tee times begin at 12:05 p.m. PT off No. 10 at Boulder Creek G.C. where the final two rounds will also be held. The tee times for Thursday and Friday are based off the standings.

A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's fired a 7-under par 281 to win its triangular back on May 2 at Blackberry Ridge G.C. (par 72). The Johnnies won the four-team tournament by five shots ahead of Carleton (-2, 286), followed by Alexandria T.C.C. (+4, 292) and SJU Blue (+26, 314). The 7-under par is tied for the sixth-best round in program history.

Seniors Mark Longhenry (Bloomington, Minn./Holy Angels) and Blake Schuler (Waconia, Minn.) tied for first place in the 25-man field with a 4-under par 68 each.

Senior Nate Loxtercamp (Richmond, Minn./Melrose Area) collected his 10th round at par or better with an even-par 72 and classmate Sam Berger (Waconia, Minn.) added a 1-over par 73. Junior Andrew Boemer (Eagan, Minn./St. Thomas Academy) served as the Johnnies' drop score at 74 (+2).

Junior Cole Proctor (Brainerd, Minn.) led SJU Blue with a 77 (+5).

MIAC HONORS: The MIAC announced its 2023-24 awards earlier today (May 13). Berger (fourth), Boemer (t-sixth) and Loxtercamp (10th) earned All-MIAC honors by placing in the top 10 at the MIAC Championship held Sept. 30-Oct. 2. The Johnnies have had 34 All-MIAC honorees over the last eight seasons.

RANKED NO. 11: SJU moved up one spot to No. 11 in the final Bushnell/Golfweek Division III Coaches' Top 25 poll of the regular season released May 3. The Johnnies totaled 180 points for 11th, one point ahead of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (Calif.) at No. 12. Bethel is No. 13 (166), while Gustavus Adolphus (6) and Wisconsin-Eau Claire (2) received votes.

The Johnnies moved up one spot to No. 10 in the Clippd rankings posted on Wednesday (May 1) but slipped to No. 11 in updated calculations published on May 2. The Clippd rankings are statistical and replace longtime provider Golfstat. 

SJU'S NCAA HISTORY: The Johnnies are making their seventh-consecutive trip to the NCAA Championship and 21st in the last 24 seasons (since 2000). Of the previous 20, SJU has 16 top-15 finishes, including 12 in the top 10. SJU won back-to-back national championships in 2007 and 2008.

THE FIELD: A total of 221 participants, 43 teams and six individuals, will compete at the 2024 NCAA Championship. The Johnnies will be joined by Allegheny (Pa.), No. 9/10 Aurora (Ill.), No. 13 Bethel, No. 3 Carnegie Mellon (Pa.), No. 12/14 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (Calif.), Eastern Connecticut State, No. 2 Emory (Ga.), Farmingdale State (N.Y.), No. 23/24 Franklin & Marshall (Pa.), Hope (Mich.), No. 7 Huntingdon (Ala.), Husson (Maine), No. 5 Illinois Wesleyan, No. 23 Kenyon (Ohio), No. 22/25 LeTourneau (Texas), Luther (Iowa), No. 6 Lynchburg (Va.), Marymount (Va.), No. 1 Methodist (N.C.), Mississippi University for Women, New England College (N.H.), No. 4 Oglethorpe (Ga.), Otterbein (Ohio), Penn College, Penn State-Altoona, No. 18/22 Redlands (Calif.), No. 25 Rochester (N.Y.), Roger Williams (R.I.), Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (Ind.), St. John Fisher (N.Y.), No. 15 Schreiner (Texas), Scranton (Pa.), No. 9/10 Sewanee (Tenn.), Springfield (Mass.), Stevens Institute of Technology (N.J.), No. 12/14 Texas-Dallas, Tufts (Mass.), No. 8 Washington and Lee (Va.), Whitman (Wash.), Wisconsin-Superior, No. 15/16 Wittenberg (Ohio) and York (Pa.).

The six individuals are Andrew Bennett of Centenary (La.), Gabe Benson of Concordia-Moorhead, Elliot Parker of Drew (N.J.), James Alden of Guilford (N.C.), Avery Stansell of Rhodes (Tenn.) and Jacob Mason of Trinity (Texas). 

THE CUT: The field will be cut to the top 18 teams and top six individuals (not playing on one of those teams) following the first two rounds.

THE FIVE: The Johnnies are scheduled to send their top five golfers to Kentucky this week.

4. Schuler (74.8 avg. in 23 rounds)

SINGLE-SEASON RECORDS: The Johnnies and Loxtercamp are on pace to break a pair of SJU season records. SJU enters the NCAA Championship with a 291.8 average in 23 rounds, which is 1.3 better than the record of 293.1 (in 24 rounds) set last season. Loxtercamp, meanwhile, has a 72.4 average in 23 rounds, 10 of which were at par or better. Joe Schoolmeesters '09 holds SJU's single-season record of 72.8 (in 25 rounds) set in 2007-08 – the Johnnies' last national championship.

SEVEN MONTHS AGO: SJU finished 13 out of 18 teams at the elite NCAA Division III Preview back on Oct. 29-31 at Boulder Creek G.C. Twelve of the tournament's 18 teams were nationally ranked. Methodist (N.C.) fired a 22-under par 266 to win the tourney by 25 shots with a three-day total of 850 (-14). Carnegie Mellon was second at 875 (+11), followed by a tie between Emory and Washington & Lee in third at 876 (+12). 

SJU recorded 21 birdies and two eagles on the day to close with a three-round score of 902 (+38), one shot behind then-No. 11 Wittenberg (Ohio) in 12th (+37, 902). The Johnnies tied for fourth with 47 birdies in the tournament.

Longhenry led SJU with six birdies during the final round for a 2-under par 70. He tied for 16th out of 90 golfers with a three-day total of 220 (+4).

Loxtercamp tallied three birdies and an eagle to match Longhenry with a 2-under par 70. He tied for 41st with a 226 (+10) and ended the fall schedule with a team-best 73.0 average in 16 rounds.

Boemer countered a triple bogey on his first hole with five birdies and an eagle to tally a 1-over par 73. He tied for 68th with a 232 (+16).

Berger matched Boemer's five birdies and collected a 3-over par 75. He tied for 53rd with a 229 (+13), while Schuler placed 78th with a 237 (+21).
