Writing a book is an interesting and unique process. Authors build out characters, figure out their motivations and what drives them, and set them on a journey of change and discovery. But what I’ve found as I’ve written my Isles of Illusion trilogy is that certain characters have ended up on journeys very similar to ones that I’ve been on.

As an author, I always pray that my books would entertain and delight the people who read it, but I also hope that readers will be able to take something hearty away from it. I didn’t have that same expectation of myself as the writer, but that’s what has happened. These three books have made me look introspectively at my own life and my own journey.

For instance (no major spoilers), what the hero Baze experiences in the second book with his injury was very similar to something I went through as a teen, and I realized that in order to help Baze walk through it and have a satisfying conclusion, I needed to take a good, hard look at how I had dealt with it and what conclusion I had come to.

So, in the third and final book, The Magic of Redemption, the heroine Adelynn wrestles with some lies and falsehoods whispered by the voices in her head, and they’re very similar to thoughts that I was struggling against the past couple of years. It’s been a hard time for me, and so I worried that I wouldn’t be able to weave in the hope and redemption that that kind of sadness needs. However, at one point in the story, when Adelynn is despairing, her friend offers her some hope:

“It’s too late.” My sobs heightened. “I’ve strayed too far.”

“You have strayed far, yes, but do you know what?” Her lips tipped in the tiniest smile. “God can keep up with you, and He has been walking right by your side with His hand outstretched. Now all you need to do is take it—and hold on tight. He’s got you.”

Those words certainly weren’t from me—because they were words I needed to hear. And every time I read them, they make me cry.

We might find ourselves in a rut and going through hard situations and start believing untrue things—that the things we’ve done have knocked us out of God’s favor, that we’ve gone too far down a path to turn back, that God has pulled away.

All false. His blood covers all of our sins, and we have inherent worth because He gives us worth.

The Magic of Redemption delves into the hopeless pockets that we can find ourselves in, but it shows us that God can lift us out of it. I hope that this book—and this series—enthralls you with the beauty of England and Ireland, delights you with the relationships, keeps you on your toes with the suspense and mystery. But most importantly, that it draws you closer to God.

There used to be a sign above my childhood church’s door that said: “When God seems far away, ask who has moved.”

God’s right here. He hasn’t gone anywhere. And he’s waiting for us to take his hand.

I would like to read The Magic of Redemption by Jessica Sly because it sounds like an interesting tale.

  2. Great line – “God can keep up with you.” I’m tucking that one away. So many people are hurting and losing hope and they need to be reminded of that.
