University Problem

I just got rejected by Ewha Woman’s University and I’ve also applied to Yonsei. The acceptance and all is yet to be announced in June. But I’m so stressed that I wouldn’t get in. I thought my profile was good enough. I have state level trophies in singing, a two year junior diploma in Classical music, two years of guitar, two years of social welfare volunteering and a 3.0 GPA in high school. Will I get accepted? 🙁😔😶‍🌫️🫣😬

We can't answer that. What country are you from? Do you have Korean test results? What department did you apply to?

Even if you told us, it would be impossible to give you a reasonable answer.

😔 I’m from India and I applied to the business department. They didn’t ask for any Korean test results, just SAT and DET.

So only Rank 1 Koreans get in to Yonsei, right? It isn't as difficult for foriegners (enrollment caps), but I'm not sure what scale your 3.0 is on.

3.0 on 4 point scale.

Are you a foreigner of non-Korean descent? I’m not sure what the standards are for foreigners

I’m Indian. No Korean roots.

3.0 and 1350 is kinda low sorry… but the standard for non Korean descent people should be a bit lower. My SAT was a 1560 for reference (Engineering).

Bro we don't even have SAT here

Where is here

Not even the extra curriculars can help?! 😭

Again, no idea what the standards are for foreigners, but Korea is very academics first, extracurriculars second.

The extracurriculars serve to differentiate you from candidates with similar scores, they themselves aren’t really going to carry your application. But maybe you’ll get lucky.

Sorry to give you less than positive news, I really hope I can see you on campus next year

It can! Just like he said above the standard for SAT is lower for international students, mine was 1500, I know some that got in with 1450-1500 SAT, probably there are people with even lower scores. Extracurricular is a must when it comes to top universities, especially if you are a foreign student (because school culture is different overseas, Korean schools focus a lot more on exams and grades while most of the schools overseas are known to focus on extracurricular activities more (and of course admission officers know that)). Anyway, I’m hoping you get in! <3

Do you have an SAT? Your GPA is quite low for a lot of universities tho

Yeah I forgot, I got a 1350. My GPA is 3.0 out of 4. Is that low?

u/Cultural_Tradition_3 avatar

I only know admitted people with 3.7+

😭😭😭😭

I’m sorry, I don’t know. Your gpa seems to be a little low, mine was 3.8 out of 4.0 (but I’m also in STEM, maybe your GPA is enough for non science major? I really don’t know I’m sorry), I’m also an international student with no Korean roots. Look, the thing is, music is popular among women from high end families, families like that in Korea send people either to business, medicine or music, that probably means that there aren’t a lot of spots in top universities for these 3 majors. But look, your background seems to be good. Yonsei LOVES international students, I think you have a good chance, but of course I don’t know. The only advice I can give you is to cheer up! And maybe look for alternative universities for the next semester for now ;)

Thanks dude, I kinda feel a little better 😭

I have the same concern, but I know Yonsei is more lenient with International students. Like for me I applied to IS and have competed at state level twice and had officer positions in a quite large student business organization. I have volunteering and more extracurricular but yea basically I’m trying to say dont lose hope. Yonsei def has a better reputation for international students when it comes to korean universities

Hopefully…..😔 Thanks for the encouragement 🫶🏻

of course and good luck!
