EDINBURG, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Authorities in Edinburg have arrested two women and a man in connection to a disturbing child abuse case. Selena Quintanilla Silva, aged 21, is facing charges of injury to a child, child endangerment, tampering with evidence, and perjury. Silva’s boyfriend, Mathew Martinez, was apprehended by Beaumont police on a charge of injury to a child. Additionally, Martinez’s mother, 50-year-old Maria del Rosario Castillo, was also arraigned on the same charges as Silva.
A probable cause affidavit provided intricate details into the arrests of the three individuals. The incident unfolded when officers responded to a distressing situation at Doctors Hospital at Renaissance. Hospital staff reported that a 17-month-old infant was brought in unresponsive, with visible bruising all over her body and a laceration under her chin.
An investigator who arrived at the scene witnessed the baby with severe bruising all over her body, healing rib fractures, and a fractured forearm, as stated in the affidavit.
Upon questioning, Silva, identified as the child’s mother, initially provided a false story. She claimed that her mother picked up the child that morning, and upon feeling uneasy, she contacted Castillo for assistance. However, Silva later confessed to striking the child with a wooden board the previous night, according to the affidavit.
Further investigations revealed shocking details of the abuse, with both Silva and Castillo admitting to inflicting harm on the child. Castillo confessed to dragging the child to the truck while out running errands, causing breathing issues. Nursing staff at the hospital updated authorities on the baby’s critical condition, stating that she had suffered a cardiac arrest and required resuscitation.
Additional evidence from the suspects’ cellphones implicated them further, with Martinez being linked to causing a bruise under the child’s chin. Silva eventually admitted to a pattern of abuse, involving hitting the child with various objects over a period of time.
During a search of the residence, authorities discovered incriminating evidence, including bloody clothing that had been discarded. Both Silva and Castillo accused each other of disposing of the evidence. Following their arraignment, the two women had bonds set at $420,000 each, while Martinez is expected to be arraigned at a later date.
