Catarina Macario exits with thigh injury as Chelsea wins WSL title

For the fifth-consecutive season, the Women’s Super League title is staying in London.

Chelsea won the 2023-24 league title on Saturday after rolling past Manchester United 6-0 at old Trafford. U.S. women’s national team forward Catarina Macario played 41 minutes in the match before leaving with an apparent thigh injury.

Emma Hayes, who will take over as USWNT manager this June, won her seventh league title with the Blues.

It was a fast start for Chelsea, who lead 2-0 in the opening 10 minutes thanks to goals from Mayra Ramirez and Johanna Rytting-Kaneryd.

After Macario exited the match before halftime, Chelsea extended its lead to 4-0 through Sjoeke Nusken first goal of the match and Ramirez’s second.

Melanie Leupolz and Fran Kirby added second-half tallies to pad Chelsea’s lead before the final whistle.

Macario, who missed the first half of the season through injury, tallied one goal and five assists in seven league appearances this spring. The USWNT forward would be a major loss ahead of the Paris Olympics this summer.

Hayes will aim to get the USWNT back on track this summer after a poor showing at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup last year.

  1. Well with the Olympics two months away perhaps this won’t be an issue. Especially given Emma knows her well, if this isn’t serious she could still be back. Report I heard was she was checked in 35th minute and then went back in and tried it before coming off.

    • Might have been a precautionary measure so she wouldn’t aggravate it further, keeping her out of contention for a call up before the Olympic team is settled on
