Atlético-MG sends a document to the CBF and defends the suspension of the Brazilian Championship

In the document, the club argues that the competition should be paused and only return at the beginning of June.

Atlético-MG published a letter on Tuesday advocating for the suspension of the Brazilian Championship due to the heavy rainfall and flooding that hit Rio Grande do Sul. The document was to the CBF, which called for a meeting on May 27 with all the presidents the Serie A clubs to discuss the possibility.

In the document, the club argues that the competition should be paused and only resume at the beginning of June. The club also highlights the Ministry of Sports’ request, formalized last Friday (10/5), for the competition to be suspended, through Minister André Fufuca.

The club showed alignment with the request of the Liga Forte, made up of 11 clubs, which advocated for a temporary interruption of the tournament. Atlético-GO, Athetico-PR, Criciúma, Cruzeiro, Cuiabá, Juventude, Fluminense, Fortaleza, Botafogo, Internacional, and Vasco da Gama signed the letter.

Atlético confirms its full agreement with the total suspension, for a period of 02 (two) rounds, of the Brazilian Championship | Serie A – 2024, following the recommendation issued by the Ministry of Sports, and in line with the position previously expressed by the Liga Forte União do Futebol Brasileiro, due to the environmental tragedy that has affected Rio Grande do Sul in recent days, thus resulting in the declaration of a state of public calamity in that State.

Atlético believes that the temporary suspension of the competition until 05/31/2024 is necessary to maintain the equal and fair nature of the competition, as well as to reflect the humanitarian concern that should be directed towards the people of Rio Grande do Sul and their Clubs, at a time when mourning affects them.
