Rock star Dave Grohl encouraged fans during a concert to remember his friend Steve Albini, a music legend, who recently died.

Widely regarded as an unstoppable rock god, Dave Grohl is a musical hero to millions. The 55-year-old American icon has long been the frontman of the beloved band Foo Fighters, famed for such massive hits as Everlong, The Pretender, Learn To Fly, and Best Of You. Dave Grohl wants fans to ‘remember’ music producer Steve Albini

Taking the stage for a Foo Fighters gig in Charlotte, North Carolina on Thursday, May 9th 2024, Dave gave a heartfelt tribute in honor of his good friend Steve Albini.

“Tonight, I’d like to dedicate this song to a friend that we lost the other day, who I’ve known for a long, long time,” he told a sea of fans. “And he left us much too soon.”

Tragically, the American musician and audio engineer who worked with Nirvana on their third and final album In Utero passed away from a heart attack at the age of 61 just a couple of days before Dave gave his dedication.

“He’s touched all of your lives, I’m sure,” Dave added. “Talking about Steve Albini. For those of you who know, you know. For those of you who don’t know, just remember that name: Steve Albini. So let’s sing this one for him.”

He then proceeded to play the popular single My Hero, the crowd erupting in an emotional outburst from the song’s intro.

Working with Nirvana was just one of the exciting times in a career full of revered musical collaborations. For example, Steve also served as an audio engineer on projects from Pixies, The Breeders, and PJ Harvey.

Beyond his work in music, he also became renowned for his outspoken views against the wider music industry, notably the treatment of young bands by record labels.

PJ Harvey and other collaborators pay tribute to Steve Albini

Dave isn’t the only one of Steve’s dear friends and past collaborators to pay tribute to the much-loved figure in the alternative music sphere.

“The Breeders are mourning the sudden passing of Steve Albini,” the band The Breeders posted on their official X/Twitter page. “He built worlds.” The Breeders is fronted by Kim Deal, who was also in the aforementioned band Pixies.

Steve also worked with English singer-songwriter PJ Harvey on her second studio album, 1993’s Rid Of Me.

“Meeting Steve Albini and working with him changed the course of my life,” she recently tweeted. “He taught me so much about music, and life. Steve was a great friend – wise, kind, and generous. I am so grateful. My thoughts are with him and his family and friends as we suffer his loss.”

So many fans in general have come forward in their grief too. “There will truly never be another Steve Albini – pioneer, maverick, iconoclast,” one tweeted. “He did it his way. And it really was quite something. Rest in Power.”
