Forget about the shipping even the Storm-Rogue and Storm-Gambit friendships were completely wiped out of existence .
I think the point is that we have to be patient and watch their journey. It could just be that Rogue chose Remy before he died, but I’m pretty sure he’ll eventually be back as a Horseman of Apocalypse. There’s a lot of stuff to work through before him and Rogue can settle down and be the couple they are in the comics today.

It was a thing in the comics, and during the 90s. It's not like her and Gambit were immediately married with, no issues, no other love interests right away
I think them diving into her conflicted (horny) feelings for Magneto is to soften the blow of them being together in Age of Apocalypse (if they choose to adapt it in a future season).
Also, just for the drama. The X-Men’s personal lives are a soap opera

There are people that have only known the OG show, so for them its only ever been Rogue and Gambit, though Gambit had his flirty moments with other women and a whole other fiance thing going on. Other romantic relationship arcs were never explored with them, so I guess there suddenly being one, and that person being Magneto was a bit of a shocked Pikachu face.
I imagine that the fans who knew the comics didn't find it such a surprise and maybe quite happy to see that arc explored. In Mr and Mrs X Rogue and Gambit talk about previous relationships quite openly, with Rogue even teasing about how good a kisser Deadpool is. The conversation between Rogue and Magneto after her wedding I found quite sweet as well.

And I'm glad that when they did make them official, their break up was nice. No zaladane incident or Magneto Rex stuff, they parted on good terms
"In the comics" no one that's watching the show cares about AOA, the only other time was after age of x where she had full control of her powers but didn't think she was worry of gambit so she went and banged magneto for only one night. They haven't had s relationship in the main universe. And age of x was stupid. An alternate universe where some keep their memories was stupid.
