WASHINGTON COUNTY, MAINE: A Maine woman has been sentenced to 55 years in prison for fatally stabbing her longtime friend, delivering nearly 500 stab wounds.

For context, in April 2022, Kim Neptune was discovered deceased, wrapped in a blanket, with 484 stab wounds, at her Pleasant Point residence.

Kailie A Brackett's sentencing took place on Friday, May 10, following her conviction in December 2023, as reported by People.

What happened during Kailie Brackett’s hearing?

During Kailie Brackett's sentencing hearing, the atmosphere was emotional, with many spectators, particularly those representing Neptune, filling the gallery and shedding tears.

Loved ones of Neptune delivered statements highlighting the pain of her loss for both their family and the wider community.

Each speaker requested the maximum sentence of life for Brackett. Many described Neptune as "kind" and "caring," noting her willingness to help anyone in need.

Brackett's family, including her parents, sister, and a family friend, also addressed the court. They conveyed their shock and disbelief at the notion that Brackett could be capable of such a gruesome murder.

Brackett's mother criticized her daughter's legal counsel during her statement, describing them as "incompetent" and suggesting they did not adequately represent her.

She also expressed concern for Brackett's minor son, citing instances of bullying and even alleging that her trailer, where she and Brackett's son lived, was burned down following the murder.

Following her family’s statement, Brackett made a statement asserting that she was not responsible for Neptune's death, suggesting that the person or persons responsible might still be at large.

Donnell Dana faced charges in Kim Neptune’s murder

Initially, a man named Donnell Dana was charged and tried for Neptune's murder. Dana faced a mistrial in December 2023 due to a deadlocked jury.

Dana subsequently pleaded guilty to lesser charges related to "hindering apprehension or prosecution for disposing of evidence" connected to Brackett's murder charge.

Dana and Brackett share a child, and Dana had resided with Neptune before 2021, as per WABI TV.

How did Kim Neptune’s family react at Kailie Brackett’s sentencing?

Kim Neptune's family is now focusing on the healing process.

Passamaquoddy Councilmember Adam Newell claimed, "We’re relieved that justice was served. And then tomorrow and the next day and then so on, we’re going to start looking at different things of healing together as a community, as one."

Neptune's nephews, Henri, 12, and Louie, 14, express their commitment to preserving "Auntie Kim's" memory: "We do a walk for her, and like we go from our health center to Split Rock, which is like a place where we do Indian Day and stuff. We do that, and we also, like our family, we also do a dinner for her.."

The judge mentioned the possibility of Brackett appealing her sentence, although it remains uncertain whether she will pursue this option.
