Jenna Ortega is a star in Hollywood in 2024. The one who made a 7-second cameo in Iron Man 3 in 2013 is today a leading actress. Before rediscovering her as Wednesday Addams in season 2 of the eponymous series on Netflix, she tried out a very different role. Unfortunately for her, the film is lit with a bang.

The advent of Jenna Ortega in Hollywood

Jenna Ortega, who turns 21 in May 2024, already has a long acting career behind her, mainly on television, but not only. After cutting her teeth in Jane the Virgin and especially Stuck in the Middle, she obtained a few minor roles in the cinema and on Netflix before becoming the new Scream Queen of the 7th Art. In 2022, the North American actress starred in the horror films X and Scream. The same year, he achieved recognition thanks to his role as Wednesday Addams in the series Wednesday directed by Tim Burton (4 episodes out of 8) himself.

In 2023, she resumed the role of Tara Carpenter in Scream VI before leaving the saga following the dismissal of Melissa Barrera. Nevertheless, 2024 should be a good year for Jenna Ortega who finds herself starring in Miller’s Girl, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Klara and the Sun and finally Death of a Unicorn. Unfortunately for the actress, the first feature film mentioned was not extremely well received by critics. It’s quite the opposite ! Jade Halley Bartlett’s film is one of the great critical and commercial disappointments of the year.

The failure of 2024 for Jenna Ortega

Without further ado, the film that currently interests us is none other than Miller’s Girl with Jenna Ortega and Martin Freeman (the Sherlock Holmes series, The Hobbit trilogy) in the lead roles. Written and directed by Jade Halley Bartlett, this erotic thriller between a literature professor and a young 18-year-old student created controversy, particularly because of an intimate scene who knew how to shock puribundant America. Controversy is a good thing, as long as you have a strong cinematic argument and a creative vision to bring it to life.

The critics who have seen the work in question are almost unanimous. It’s a cold shower for Miller’s Girl which displays an evocative 29% on Rotten Tomatoes. Chrales Bramesco’s review for Inside Hood seems to sum up the general opinion of the film: “From one scene to the next, the viewer may have difficulty discerning whether this is a simply stupid film, an amusing specimen of semi-witty camp or a sneaky shot of high-flying self-parody.”

The admission of failure cannot keep people waiting. Released at the end of January 2024 in the United States, the distributor Lionsgate has already transferred the broadcasting rights to Netflix in North America. Miller’s Girl did not cross the million US dollar mark during its theatrical release (US$889,522). Luckily, the SVOD market still allows it to hope for a return on investment. And it starts well. It entered the TOP 10 most watched films on Netflix in the United States for the week of April 29 to May 5, 2024.
