Weather Alters Series at IU: Doubleheader Now Thursday, Single Game Friday

5/15/2024 12:54:00 PM | Baseball

SCHEDULE NOTE (5/16/24): The expected inclement weather that initially postponed Friday's (May 17) originally scheduled game between Michigan and Indiana to Thursday (May 16) is no longer in the forecast. As a result, the teams agreed to reschedule Saturday's (May 17) regular-season finale for Friday at 6 p.m. at Bart Kaufman Field.

SCHEDULE NOTE (5/16/24): Due to the potential of inclement weather on Friday, May 17, that game has been moved to Thursday, May 16. The teams will now play a doubleheader on Thursday (May 16) beginning at 1 p.m. at Bart Kaufman Stadium in Bloomington, Ind. Following the doubleheader on Thursday (May 16), the series will conclude with a single game on Saturday (May 18) at 2 p.m. -- as originally scheduled.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team (29-24, 13-8 Big Ten) heads to Bart Kaufman Stadium in Bloomington, Ind., for a three-game series against the Hoosiers (28-21-1, 13-8 Big Ten) -- the final games of the regular season. The series will open on Thursday (May 16) at 5 p.m. on Big Ten Network. The series continues Friday (May 17) at 6 p.m., with the finale on Saturday (May 18) at 2 p.m. The final two games will be streamed live on B1G+.

Notes

• Michigan is coming off a Big Ten series win against Purdue to move into a three-way tie for third place in the conference with the Boilermakers and Indiana. After dropping a closely contested game on Friday (May 10), U-M responded with a 7-6 walk-off win on Saturday to even the series. In the rubber match, the Wolverines used four home runs to take an 8-4 win and the series. U-M continued its hot streak Tuesday (May 14), run-ruling Akron 14-4 with three home runs.

• The Wolverines have been excellent this season in series finales going 9-1 in those contests and 6-0 in rubber matches. In conference finales, U-M is 7-0 and hitting .328 with a .438 on-base percentage. Michigan has struggled opening conference weekends, going just 2-5 in openers and batting .195 as a team. In the middle game of a conference series, U-M is 4-3 and hitting .273.

Collin Priest had a huge weekend against Purdue, batting .545 with a 1.091 slugging percentage to earn Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors. He tallied four extra-base hits, including three in the win on Saturday for a new career high. In the Saturday win, he also set new career highs in doubles (two) and hits (four). Priest followed up the weekend with a 3-for-4 day against the Zips with a double, two runs, and an RBI. On the season, Priest is hitting .287 with eight home runs and a 1.013 OPS and eight home runs. His home run total ranks fourth in program history by a freshman.

• Over the last 10 games, Stephen Hrustich has rediscovered his power at the plate, hitting six home runs including in consecutive contests (May 12 vs. Purdue, May 14 vs. Akron). He has hit 15 this season and is batting .395 with 12 runs and 14 RBIs, also leading the team with a .490 on-base percentage. Hrustich hit eight home runs over the season's first 28 games, but did not hit one for the next 16.

• Shortstop Kyle Dernedde is the only Wolverine to start every game this season. He is fifth on the team in batting average (.259) with 10 doubles and a .386 OBP bolstered by 25 walks and 14 hit-by-pitches. In back-to-back games, Dernedde has homered against Purdue on Sunday and Akron on Tuesday.

Mitch Voit is third on the team in batting average (.292) with a team-leading 61 hits and 20 doubles. Over his last 10 games, he is hitting .306 with four home runs and two doubles. Voit is tied for the conference lead in doubles and sits ninth on the single-season program list -- just six shy of claiming the top spot.

• In conference play, Mack Timbrook leads the team hitting .385 with a .443 on-base percentage. On the season, he also leads the team in average hitting .320 with 57 hits. Timbrook has raised his average by over 100 points since the start of conference play.

• Since his return to the starting lineup on April 30, Jonathan Kim is 12-for-42 (.286) with eight runs and two homers. He has reached base in eight of his nine starts since his return after dealing with an injury. Kim has started the past eight games in center field and has been the leadoff hitter.

• Wolverines pitchers have found a new gear in conference play, and are third in earned-run average (4.88), trailing Nebraska (4.29) and Purdue (4.43) while pitching the second-most innings in Big Ten play at 191.2. Michigan has not had a consistent rotation but has utilized Kurt Barr, Jacob Denner, Chase Allen and Dylan Vigue among others over the past few weekends.

• Barr leads the Wolverines pitching staff this season with a 3.54 ERA across 73.2 innings. He is 5-3 on the season with eight starts and 18 appearances. Barr is ninth in the conference among qualified pitchers with a 3.70 ERA in Big Ten games and fifth among pitchers with 40 innings or more. He earned Big Ten Pitcher of the Week honors in March after 11 innings pitched with a 0.82 ERA.

• In his fifth season, Denner has moved up the U-M career ranks. His 91 appearances are good for third all-time, and he recently passed Evan Hill for fifth place on the Michigan innings-pitched list with 275. Denner's four combined strikeouts over the weekend against Purdue and Tuesday's contest against the Zips put him at 254, one short of fifth place (Brett Adcock, 255).

• Even without turning a double play over the weekend, U-M still leads the nation with 57, and have surpassed the program totals of 18 of the last 24 seasons. Dernedde and Timbrook rank among the top double-play combinations in the nation, responsible for 39 this season.

• Indiana is 28-21-1 on the season and is tied for third in the conference with a 13-8 record. The Hoosiers have won five of seven of their conference series but dropped the most recent series to Nebraska, winning only the series opener. All-time, U-M is 137-77 against IU and 64-38 in Bloomington. Last season, the teams met in the Big Ten Tournament with Michigan coming out on top 13-6. Voit earned his first career start in the game and earned the win with five strikeouts in 5.2 innings, adding four hits and two runs at the plate.
