The Ranger’s Apprentice: Ruins of Gorlan by John Flanagan follows the journey of an orphan boy named Will when he begins his journey as a Ranger. Will follows his mysterious mentor, Halt, on the assignments that he receives, all varying from assisting a farmer to following an order from the king to investigate the possible revival of a man long thought to be dead. Throughout his journey, Will learns more about what exactly being a Ranger means, and whether he wants to continue along the path of becoming one.

I loved this book. It does an amazing job of creating a detailed fantastical world that still holds enough realism to be believable. The author writes the world around the continent where the story takes place, making the politics and actions feel more impactful. The characters are all well thought out with realistic flaws and personality that makes them relatable. The relationships between each of them are believable as well, especially between Halt and Will. Overall, this book is definitely 5 stars in my opinion.
