Sunderland College set to host birthday event for men’s mental health charity

Written by on 13th May 2024

Space North East is celebrating another incredible year of providing mental health support for the men of Sunderland. From charity walks to weekly meet-ups, the charity has gone above and beyond to offer advice and spread awareness of mental health and male suicide rates.

The charity was founded by James Fildes two years ago in an attempt to tackle depression loneliness and anxiety in Sunderland, after a personal battle with his own mental health.

James Fildes, Managing Director at Space, said: “There’s been so much hard work and time spent by the whole team, that it’s only right we celebrate our 2nd birthday properly! Over the past two years, we’ve worked with Sunderland Football Club, organised huge community walks, ran over 100 free support groups, grown our team of volunteers, had sold out Space To Think events in the city centre and much more.”

After working with the charity for the past year, Sunderland College will be hosting a Birthday Gala for Space to acknowledge the amazing work they do for our city.

Kelly Mounsey, Lecturer at Sunderland College, said: “We have loved working with James this year, his enthusiasm and passion for working with the students is inspiring, and the students have really engaged and learned a lot. We have engaged with many others in the local community whilst planning this and this is vital to our students learning and development.”

The event will include food, welcome drinks, and entertainment which includes inspirational guest speakers.

City Bistro will be putting together a three-course set menu of mushroom bruschetta starters, followed by a honey and garlic chicken with new potatoes, baby carrots and asparagus and finished off with a sticky toffee pudding with butterscotch sauce.

The students organising the event as part of their ‘Managing Conferences and Events’ module are hoping to sell 50 tickets for the event at £25 each.

The gala will be held at City Bistro on 23rd May 2024 at 17:45.

There will also be a raffle and prize donations would be greatly welcomed by the staff and students involved.
