Scandinavia

I’m sure this has been covered but I’ll ask again. We picked up really cheap business class flights into and out of Helsinki and will be there 30 days. We would like to do a largely driving holiday to include lower Finland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark. Happy to take trains, ferries, but think we would get to Stockholm and pick up a car there then drop it back there before heading back to Helsinki. AI gave me what looks like a good itinerary, but I want to be sure it hasn’t missed anything great. It also didn’t do much in Finland, possibly because we didn’t want to go north. We will be there April/May. We aren’t huge on museums unless they are amazing must do’s, love local foods, little towns, walks, smaller hikes, and some adventure experiences (think zip lining but not bungee jumping 😂)

Can anyone please help with a suggested 28 day route, or at least some towns/things to do that we shouldn’t miss in those countries.

Ideally, the northernmost parts should be done as late as possible. Greenery and milder temperatures appear from say mid/late April in the south, but it can still be close to frosty temperatures mainly at night.

Do spend a good deal of time exploring the Norwegian fjords.

Culturally, at least Stockholm, Copenhagen, Bergen shouldn't be missed, including some of the main excursions from those two capitals. But it's a huge area, you'll have to be selective.

With so much time on your hands, I’d consider throwing in the Baltic states and Berlin as well. Helsinki and Tallinn are linked by cheap ferries.

3. Re: Scandinavia

30 days for 9 countries? (DK, S, SF, N, EST, LTV, LITH, PL, D)?

I really disagree. There's a lot of diversity in each of the Scandinavian countries, and tons of varied sights there. Plus distances aren't short.

Agree with timing due to earlier spring in the south. The Swedish leg could go south from Stockholm via Norrköping, Söderköping, Kalmar, Karlskrona to the Skåne province (Ystad and many smaller places) ending in Malmö.

There you could branch out to Denmark (check with the Danish forum for suggestions) with places like Roskilde, Copenhagen (of course), Odense, the west cast of Jutland and north to the top where you could take the ferry to Gothenburg and continue up to Norway.

As for Finland we did a great roadtrip last summer in the southern parts. Starting in Helsinki you could go east via Borgå, Lappenranta, Punkaharju (lovely nature area near lake Saimen), Savonlinna (great castle), Mikkeli, Häämenlinna (again great old castle), Tampere (beatiful industrial city with rapids) and last Turku (Åbo).

That AI generated plan misses so much. For example, Haga in Gothenburg is basically one street that MAY be interesting but is WAY over-rated. The Stockholm section makes no mention of the Vasa Museum, which was a highlight of my last trip to Stockholm. I think some good old-fashioned guide books would work better than AI.

Good to see Møns Klint, it really is unique place, and Møn is also really nice - include Liselund Park, Nyord village, and one of the frescoed churches plus Stege town, the only hub, there.

You should go on a canal tour in Copenhagen too. Another unique experience there would be the tower of the Church of Our Saviour.

Ørstedsparken is a nice park for a picnic. It is just next to Torvehallerne. I'd choose that rather than the Botanical Gardens or Kongens Have, though they're nice too.

10. Re: Scandinavia

There are so many questions when reading that plan. Some part suggest driving but other public transportation and why Bergen to Copenhagen in one day - only sensible if youre flying. Public transportation for longer travel and pick up a rental car in 2 or 3 spots for more leasur travel this will give more time to see little villages and some walks.

Spring will arrive earlier further south so consider Denmark first and Norway last.

Even with chilly weather the Fjord region of Norway should be a highlight consider adding a day or two.

Lots of cities (7) maybe only 5 to have more time for nature and quaint villages.

If you still consider a rental car Stockholm- Stockholm I would recomend Sweden - Denmark and then ferry to Norway.

Sey kayaking is great by the way by the sea will still be very cold - possible with good clothes but many would consider May a bit early. 2024 we had freezing temperatures some nights in May - that was colder than usual but come prepared.
