Hi -,
Have you ever felt stuck in your life, unsure why? Your specific circumstances weren’t obviously restrictive or harmful, but you couldn’t shake this feeling of stagnation and dissatisfaction.
Through my work with clients over the years, I have been presented with this experience countless times: things are stable and good, yet there is a gnawing feeling of monotony and boredom.
This feeling of stagnation stems from one of the greatest dangers we face as humans: avoiding change.
You can see it, feel it, imagine it: the other, new, alternative option. But it's scary, isn't it? Change your job, switch to a different partner, move to a different state or country, or disengage from an unhealthy relationship.
Just thinking about it is enough to trigger fear in one’s chest – and the fear triggers thoughts about how wrong it could go – and the thoughts paralyze you.
Resisting change removes the possibility for learning and growth, a vital part of our humanity, leading to a sense of unease and apathy.
Let’s look at occupational change for example. Traditionally, working for someone else as an employee is considered safe because it offers predictable work hours, consistent income, and clearly outlined responsibilities. It offers stability.
On the other hand, working for yourself as an entrepreneur or freelancer is considered risky because of the potentially inconsistent cash flow and complete responsibility.
What if we looked through a different lens though, and considered risk relative to how our work allows us to evolve and grow? Something we know every human needs in order to feel fulfilled.
From this perspective it would seem that working for someone else who has total control over your schedule, freedom, tasks, income and team is a far greater risk than working for yourself, where there is always room for change, choice, and challenge.
Many people feel appreciated through their work as employees and have healthy work/life boundaries, so it would be a massive oversimplification and untruth to say that everyone would benefit from working for themselves. It's just important for you to ask the questions and contemplate the options.
The same applies to any aspect of your life. Is there a change knocking at the doors of your consciousness, inviting you to transform?
Ever-changing alongside you,
