St. Thomas Aquinas’ Anthony Ciscar is the Broward Boys’ Scholar-Athlete of the Year

Special to the Miami Herald

Anthony Ciscar has always tried to be the most prepared whenever he is on the mound.

It usually paid off with great outings as the ace of St. Thomas Aquinas baseball team’s pitching staff.

It’s the work he put in off the field and in the classroom that Ciscar credits for getting him to where he is today.

For Ciscar, a 6-3, 210-pound righthander, that is being a University of Miami signee, a soon-to-be honors graduate of Aquinas and a possible draft pick in this summer’s Major League Baseball Draft.

“No matter what you do on the field, it’s what you do off the field that guides you and helps you become who you want to become,” Ciscar said. “That helps push you through the tough times and helps you see what you need to do and execute it.”

Ciscar’s efforts on and off the field earned him the Miami Herald’s Broward Boys Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Ciscar, a first team All-Broward and first team All-American pitcher during his career at Aquinas, finished his high school career with a 20-11 record, 235 strikeouts, 72 walks and a 2.55 ERA in 37 starts (186.2 innings). He led the Raiders to three district championships.

This past season, Ciscar helped the Raiders compile an 18-10 record and return to the Region 4-6A quarterfinals before losing to West Boca Raton. Ciscar finished his senior season with a 5-4 record, 64 strikeouts, 19 walks and a 2.11 ERA in 53 innings (10 starts and one relief appearance).

Ciscar, who wants to pursue a degree in engineering at UM, finishes high school with a 4.92 weighted GPA and in the top 10 percent of his class. He also scored a 32 on his ACT.

“It’s a good feeling because it shows how I was able to manage excelling in the classroom and the baseball field with the help of my parents and everyone at St. Thomas,” Ciscar said. “This is a big step for me as I head to college and the University of Miami.”
