A 6-acre retreat center owned by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Syracuse will close on June 30.

The Christ of King Retreat House on Syracuse's Eastside was purchased by the Diocese in 1994 from the Jesuits of Le Moyne College, who bought it from the Lipe family in 1944. Since then, it has served as a "sacred space for spiritual renewal reflection," offering two chapels, a dining room, 49 guest rooms and 18 gardens.

In a letter announcing the closure, Rev. Douglas J. Lucia stated a decline in demand for retreat experiences, the need for capital improvements on the nearly 100-year-old property and staffing challenges, have made the continued operation unsustainable.

"The Diocese of Syracuse remains dedicated to fostering a vibrant spiritual life within our community," Rev. Lucia wrote. "We will find new ways, working closely with our parishes and diocesan ministries, to offer a variety of experiences and resources to support and engage the faithful."

Lucia stated the Diocese of Syracuse is committed to responsible fiscal management and the closure of the retreat house will allow the Diocese to allocate resources toward core ministries throughout the community.
