I loved this one as a kid and still do. I know the 'mystic Asian' trope (and being played by a white guy!) is maybe not in the best taste but the story still holds up and the foreboding, dreamlike atmosphere is fantastic.
Pan and the Medusa always scared me!
I think TR played this well and in good taste. Sorry, Mickey Rooney.
Agreed. Randall never seems to be making fun of the character.
In this case, having an Asian played by a white guy is justified, as it implies that "Dr. Lao" is a persona of the wizard behind everything. For more evidence of this, Dr. Lao's accent often goes away.
I always thought that as well. Not as troublesome as some portrayals.
Til his dying day, Randall never got over the negative review of the film in The New York Times, which persevered whenever a Times capsule review would appear when it played on TV. The review would say "Tony is terrible." as simple as that. The reviewer at the time, the esteemed Bosley Crowther, actually abhorred stop motion animation, and panned any fantasy movie that used it, but Randall played seven characters, an actor's dream. so, the review cut too close to the vest.
Watched it multiple time as a kid , fun film. I don’t get caught up in the other stuff, there was nothing in poor taste. Barbara Eden is stunning as always.
It's based on a really cool novel.
Novel and film have a very different feel. Both great, though.
I loved that that his voice and personality totally changed when he was delivering his messages. I saw this movie several times and later years read the book. Very fun movie and excellent story. Plus a great ensemble cast, Arthur O'Connell and Royal Dano are always entertaining.
Lee Patrick was very good in her sad role.
I remember this from when I was a child!
Loved this as a kid. Tony Randall was a very underrated actor.
