Re-release of "Let It Be" 1970 film, roof top show recording details?

I saw this film on VHS in the 80's and I always thought it was among their best work.

Out of print for many years, it was released again on May 8th 2024. Has some Abbey Road songs too and covers of Kansas City and Besame Mucho.

No narration, bad contemporary reviews, but to me it is their best songs without the over produced strings of Phil Spector and video shows a personal side.

I couldn't find any details on the recording gear for the Abbey Road studio rooftop show with Billy Preston.

I'm guessing Ampex 8 track machines and 16mm cameras. Filming started in January 1969, right before SMPTE and LTC became a standard and I doubt they used it.

Im a fan but it was never a favorite of mine, but it was part of the story. Technology was raw and basic.
The original movie version I recall was so bad I couldn't understand much of the talking parts and the music was like a practice jam session. It was a depressing film wasn't it?

The long triple Peter Jackson-Get Back , was much better imo. I liked how it tied in with the Calendar dates and the plan of doing so much in a short few weeks....that never happened really, following the heels of the White Album.

To my ears Billy Preston saved the day, his parts brought the songs to a whole new level, improved the performance and added so much to the songs. Id never realized that before he was a huge missing "section" in the songs. Credit to George H for bringing him in. Magic Alex and his ripoff scam mixing console...funny times, chaos. Geoff Emerick said it was ripped out and sent to the scrap yard.
That whole Apple stuff was crazy per the books.

Abbey Road.... back to EMI and the impressive sound of quality returned.
Lennon was already off into the peace concerts and Paul was home with a single Sennheiser 421 and some Tape deck making his solo album.
George H had his home studio being setup, and Ringo was jamming with everyone or anyone....

never tire of the story.

The tech aspects of the emi machines/cabling etc capturing the roof set....as well as the multiple roof 16mm cameras has been out there. Camera/4trk sync was routine even in 67 for the satellite World thing done at AR 2.

I know there were several articles out there a while back where Jackson's team discusses the way LIB audio/video edits had been done by Hoggs team in 69/79....and how everything of the 1969 workflows compared to the Get Back project ehen they were dredging up the raw footage/audio.

I do not do Disney so I am hoping this is made available for sale as a DVD. I'd like to own Get Back as well. Get Back proved that the negativity between the band members was not the driving force - they were still tight and loved each other in spite of the tensions. Still, Let It Be is equally worth owning. I'm glad it has been rereleased - can't wait until I can purchase a copy.

The Rooftop was in Saville Row, not Abbey Road. The equipment used was George H.’s 3M M23 8-track and 2 of the old EMI REDD 4-bus tube consoles manned by Glyn Johns. Amps were Fenders, vocal mics were AKG C28s, A few U67s around amps and drums. Same equipment as were used in the basement of the same building. Aka. apple studio. I am sure others remember more details.

Lots of good info in "Recording The Beatles" about the roof top and Let It Be sessions.
