Great list, thank you. Listening to Masakatsu Takagi today, love it.
One of my favorite artists. His music ranges from incredible soundscapes blending classical, folk, ambient, new age (like Kagayaki) to film scores (Wolf Children) to japanese idm (Journal for People). The albums I listed in the previous comment are the most like rei harakami. He also has some really interesting abstract short films on his youtube channel.
I got so into this album a couple years ago! Such a lovely record. Thanks for the reminder that this exists :)
This is absolutely one of my favourites of all time!
As for similar stuff:
Arbol by Mild Sorrow Integrated
Until Tomorrow by Manual
Rounds by Four Tet
So Inagawa - Selfless State
Thank you for posting this!! I’m an electronica/ambient fan, and have recently become extremely interested in Japan. I didn’t know where to start with merging the two, but something about this post/its loving comments made me check this album out.
I’m only a couple of tracks in and absolutely in love. I know you were looking for recs, but thank you for accidentally recommending this to me!
Japan has a ton of great ambient music!
Would love more recs, if you like!
Masakatsu Takagi, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Takashi Kokubo, Hiroshi Yoshimura, Geinoh Yamashirogumi, Sora, Toshifumi Hinata,
You should check out an album called Evacuation by Jemapur (another Japanese artist) Aaand R.I.P. Rei Harakami. I just recently found out he passed away. I was heart broken after hearing the news. I discovered his work on the Boogiepop Phantom OST. Good times.
Listening now, cheers!
Susumu Yokota - Baroque
Have not heard this one, I love Symbol and Sakura. Thanks!
Here I Go Again on My Own - The Remote Viewer
Love this, thank you!
sorry, but how is that album 'ambient'?
I think there are lots of soft, reserved moments on this record. It can be fast and frantic on a few tracks, but I think on the whole it is quiet and introspective. I get that it is more electronic than ambient, but it has a place here imo
