PROVO — Jerome Myles had never run track before this season, but once the Corner Canyon junior opted for the team, he was off and running at a record-breaking pace.

Myles ran the fastest 100-meter dash in state history with a 10.36 seconds, breaking a 43-year-old record as the Chargers ran all over the 6A boys track and field state meet en route to a fifth consecutive championship Saturday at BYU's Robison Track Complex.

The Chargers swept the top-three spots on the podium, with Bryton Brady finishing second in 10.67 and Chryshaun Lee in third in 10.73 — three Corner Canyon runners that won a title in the 4x100-meter relay in 40.71 seconds. But they weren't done yet.

Neither was Myles, the Ole Miss football commit who somewhat went against his former track star father's wishes by joining the track team — with a challenge to beat his old marks.

Challenged accepted, with a year to spare.

"I was just so happy that all of that hard work paid off," said Myles, who lost 10 pounds during the spring from his football weight. "I finally made it happen. I've been working for the state record all year, and I finally got it.

"My dad wanted me to save my body for football. But I told myself, I've got to beat his records. I wanted to beat it today."

Everyone else's state mark, too. Myles' 10.36 broke the all-time record across all classifications, a somewhat mythical mark of 10.47 set by Murray's Brian Hazelgren in 1981. Corner Canyon's Cody Hagen set the 6A record in 2021 in 10.52, and Murray's Amari Adams reset the 5A mark last year in 10.53.

But no one had topped Hazelgren, who finished first in 3A more than 40 years ago — until Saturday. And Myles still has another year to go.

"I want to get to 10-flat, or 10.1," added Myles, who added an individual title in the 200-meter run in 21.38 seconds that also included four of the top five finishers from Corner Canyon. That helped his team overwhelm the rest of 6A,

Myles added an individual title in the 200-meter, finishing in 21.38 seconds among a group that included four of the top five finishers from Corner Canyon, rolling to 152 team points and a 67-point margin over second-place American Fork.

The record-setting blitz didn't stop until Mason Hamilton, Brock White, McKay Wells, and Tate Kjar broke the 4x400-meter record int he final race of the night, a 3:12.49 blitz that left Kjar exhausted and prone on the track while his teammates celebrated around him.

The Cavemen were led by a number of record-breakers of their own, including BYU signee Danny Simmons. Fresh off the 3,200-meter state record Thursday, the All-American cross country star who received his mission call to Atlanta, Georgia, reset his own record mark in the 1,600-meter record Saturday morning with a time of 4:01.27.

The senior who will left for his mission in June held off Utah State signee William Steadman of Herriman and future BYU teammate Zach Hillhouse of Pleasant Grove to get the win.

"This one was really big," Simmons said. "I really wanted to break four, and race my guts out. I feel like I did that today. I didn't break four, but I feel like I raced my guts out. That was as good as I could've gotten it."

Weber's Josh Hamblin was also among the record-setting performances Saturday, setting a new mark in the 110-meter hurdles in 13.80 seconds.
