Almost 30 years after his iconic performance, golf's angriest amateur is making a comeback.

Netflix announced Wednesday that a sequel to the 1996 comedy Happy Gilmore is in development, with Adam Sandler set to reprise his role as the film's neurotic title character.

"It's in the works. Fans demand it, dammit!" said Christopher McDonald, who played Shooter McGavin, Gilmore's rival in the original, in a March interview on Audacity's 92.3 The Fan radio show.

McDonald added he was "very, very pleased" after reading an early draft by Sandler.

The 1996 film, co-written by Sandler, followed a failed hockey player who transitioned to professional golf — often violently — to save his grandmother's house from foreclosure.

Joining Sandler and McDonald in the original were Julie Bowen, Frances Bay, Kevin Nealon, and Carl Weathers as Gilmore's mentor Chubbs Peterson.

Weathers, who died in February at 76, was praised by Sandler as "a true great man" in a tribute post.

"Great dad. Great actor. Great athlete," wrote Sandler, 57. "So much fun to be around...Carl will always be known as a true legend."

One of Sandler's most iconic roles, the slapstick comedy has been a favorite of golf fans and pros, inspiring recreations of Gilmore's unorthodox swing.

"The funny thing is that there are so many non-golfers who would know what the 'Happy Gilmore swing' is or they've watched the film," Ladies European Tour winner Amy Boulden told CNN's Living Golf in 2021.

"I think that's great that it's got so many people from outside of golf interested."

Further details about the Happy Gilmore sequel, including a potential release date, were not provided by Netflix.
