Thiruvananthapuram: Plans are underway to conduct ward delimitation ahead of the 2025 local self-government elections. The proposal involves creating wards in proportion to the local population in local government bodies. The government is considering convening a special cabinet meeting on May 20 to deliberate on the ordinance route for the same. It's worth noting that a regular assembly session is scheduled for May 22.
Currently, the plan is to hold the special cabinet meeting online. However, the final decision will be made after the chief minister returns from his foreign visit.
Currently, gram panchayats have one ward per 1000 people, with small panchayats having at least 13 wards and large ones having 23. This is expected to increase to 14 and 24, respectively, after the delimitation process.
Across the state, there are 15,962 wards in 941 gram panchayats. Besides, there are 3,078 wards in 87 municipalities and 414 wards in six corporations. Currently, there are 21,865 people's representatives in 1,200 local self-government bodies. Following the delimitation process, there will be an additional 1,200 local representatives.
