Leading US academic to help judge coin hoard research fund applicants

A medieval historian who specialises in coinage and monetary history is set to visit Jersey to join the panel tasked with advising on the process to allocate a £250,000 award set aside for research into the island's own coin hoard.
Dr Alan M Stahl, Curator of Numismatics at Princeton University in New Jersey, will be visiting Jersey from 16 to 19 May.
Numismatics is the study of coins and other currency units, whilst Princeton is home to one of the largest collections of ancient coins in the USA.

Dr Stahl has agreed to join the advisory panel which will assist the Trustees of the Highlands College to allocate the £250,000 Le Câtillon II Coin Hoard Fund.
Discovered in Grouville in 2012 by local amateur metal detectorists, the Le Câtillon II is the world’s largest Celtic coin hoard.
It was acquired by the Government of Jersey in 2021 for £4.25 million.
Last September, £250,000 of that figure was allocated to the Highlands College Foundation for scientific and educational research into the hoard.

The money is available to staff, students and alumni of Highlands College – as well as for research by any third party in Jersey or from overseas wishing to further investigate the historic discovery.
During Dr Stahl's visit to Jersey, he is looking to view the Le Catillon II hoard and meet finders Richard Miles and Reg Mead.
