The hit YA comedy-drama “Heartbreak High” will be returning to Netflix for a third and final season.
Announced on Friday local time, the renewal follows a hit second season that released on April 11. It debuted in the top spot in its native Australia and stayed on the streamer’s Global Top 10 English TV Series list for three consecutive weeks.
It has also been a significant social media winner. The show’s evolving love triangles, new students and iconic one-liners had the hashtag #HeartbreakHigh reach over 2 billion views on TikTok.
Season 3 “will see the talented cast and creators reassemble” in Sydney (Gadigal, Dharug, Dharawal and Ku-ring-gai lands) for the final year at Hartley High, Netflix said. But it provided no further details of casting, production schedule or release date.

The show is a reimagination of an iconic piece of Australian television that first played between 1994 and 1996 on Network Ten. A second run played from 1997 to 1999 on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, in a version that was part-funded by the BBC.
Fremantle Australia and Dutch company NewBe produced the new series after acquiring the rights from Brian Abel, partner of the late Ben Gannon, who created and produced the original show.
The show, which follows the lives of students and staff at a multicultural Sydney school, was itself a spin-off from “The Heartbreak Kid,” a 1993 Australian movie. That in turn had its origins in a 1987 stage play.
Season 1 of the rebooted series debuted in September 2022. The second season was announced a month later, in October 2022.
“The renewal of ‘Heartbreak High’ is the latest in a string of successful Australian series for Netflix, following recent hits ‘Boy Swallows Universe,’ ‘Wellmania,’ ‘Surviving Summer,’ and local films such as ‘Run Rabbit Run,’ ‘ONEFOUR: Against All Odds’ and ‘Love is in the Air,’ the streamer said.
