The Leave No Trace organization has selected Shenandoah National Park as a 2024 Spotlight site. From June 14 to June 16, a Subaru/Leave No Trace Traveling Team will be in the Park to deliver Leave No Trace education and to partner on a stewardship project.

Sites are nominated for the Leave No Trace Spotlight initiative by local land agencies or community groups. The goal of the initiative is to equip each Spotlight area with Leave No Trace tools that address the impacts the site is facing and ultimately, to foster healthy lands and people.

“Shenandoah National Park belongs to all of us, and with that ownership comes the responsibility of ensuring its health and beauty for all current and future visitors,” said Outdoor Recreation Planner Eric Frey. “The Leave No Trace Spotlight event is a great opportunity to promote and build this stewardship of the Park through a variety of different programs and activities.”

The three-day event begins Friday, June 14, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Big Meadows Amphitheater (mile 51). Participants can gain a foundational understanding of Leave No Trace principles that protect the outdoors while minimizing impacts. Saturday, June 15, will be a volunteer service project rehabilitating backcountry campsites. Registration is required: https://go.nps.gov/leave-no-trace-registration. On Sunday, June 16, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Dickey Ridge Visitor Center (mile 4.6), the Leave No Trace team will provide pop-up education. See their example of a mock campsite and backpack.

All events are free and open to the public, and people of all ages are encouraged to attend. For more information visit https://www.nps.gov/shen/planyourvisit/special_events.htm
