Macroom is set to host a special Eurovision “street party” for all ages on Saturday night, as local artist Bambie Thug attempts to take victory in the song contest’s Grand Final in Malmö.

A section of the mid Cork town’s square will be cordoned off and a big screen will be setup so that locals can watch the Eurovision live in all its glory and cheer on Bambie Thug as the singer performs ‘Doomsday Blue’.

Geraldine Galvin of the Lee Valley Enterprise Board, which has organised the event with Cork County Council and Macroom Lions Club, told The Corkman on Thursday that the event will bring a “carnival atmosphere” to the square.

She said that alongside the big screen, there will be face painting, street entertainment and a “best dressed witch competition” in honour of Macroom’s Eurovision star at the event, which everyone in the locality has been encouraged to come out for.

“We want people to wear their green, wave the Irish flag, to have all of Macroom supporting Bambie Thug,” Geraldine said, and added that: "The forecast looks good too!”

“Bambie Thug has even made a call-out video for us ahead of it.”

The Lee Valley Enterprise Board administrator said that it has already been proven that the town square has great acoustics after the success of the Macroom Music Festival last year, and that the livestreaming of the Eurovision final should go down a treat for fans.

Geraldine said that the event was organised in the 24 hours after Bambie Thug came through Tuesday evening’s Eurovision Semi-Final.

“We’ve used all our contacts to get the big screen, for setting it up, for the clean-up,” Geraldine explained.

“Everyone in the community has put their hands up and volunteered, and more volunteers are more than welcome.”

Councillor Ted Lucey, who is Mayor of Macroom, told The Corkman that he is “delighted that the council could play a part in co-funding the event so it could go ahead on such a special occasion for the town”.
