Detroit — The virus that has crept through the Tigers’ clubhouse claimed another victim.

The club placed right-handed starting pitcher Kenta Maeda on the 15-day injured list before the game Saturday with a viral illness.

The Tigers placed starting pitcher Kenta Maeda on the 15-day injured list with a viral illness.

"It finally hit our starting rotation and that's when it gets complicated," manager AJ Hinch said, referencing that a pitcher's stay on the IL is a minimum 15 days. "Kenta has been at the park for only a short time. We've sent him home multiple times. Just low energy. He doesn't feel good.

"He wasn't going to make his next start (Monday) and he hasn't felt any better the last 72 hours."

So, after another examination on Saturday, the decision was made to put him on the IL.

"He wants to pitch, but it's impossible when you break your routine and you are sick," Hinch said.

The Tigers called up outfielder Akil Baddoo to temporarily take Maeda’s roster spot. Right-hander Matt Manning, pulled from his start at Triple-A Toledo, will likely be called up to take Maeda’s turn in the rotation Monday.

The left-handed hitting Baddoo, who got to Comerica Park just ahead of game time, was hitting .257/.366/.478 with an .844 OPS with the Mud Hens.
