My love and hate relationship with adapting aesthetics to your suitor/bethrothed

Show Discussion

I'm not sure if this is exactly spoilers--- Penelope and Colin's "glow up" are already plastered over all of the trailers, and the title-image of this Reddit!

Anyways, my little rant.

I've always had a love-hate relationship with the adapting ones' aesthetic to their betrothed. I know that it was commonplace in a lot of royalty for women marrying into a new family (with changing your heraldry, adopting the house colours, traditions and mottos) but something about it feels a little... hmm, disappointing.

Don't get me wrong, Penelope's new wardrobe, from what I can see, looks absolutely gorgeous and seems to fit her palette more than the Featherington one did, and her hair is a much needed, albeit very modern improvement (greens, yellows and pinks did not flatter her hair, and the embellishments and flowers were too much) but I'd like to see, I hope, a nice blend of both of them rather than just adopting the "Bridgerton Blue". Add her butterflies, birds or some more muted flowers, maybe stray away from entirely silvers, creams, blues and perwinkle?

I'm also one of those people that loved Anthony with sideburns, so Colin (sort of) having them is a treat, but that's sort of entirely off-topic lol.

In this case it’s important to remember that Penelope’s aesthetics from the first two seasons were never hers, they were her mother’s. One of the first things we learn about Penelope is that she hates the clothes she’s forced to wear. The one time we see her take any pride in her looks is the night where her mom is too busy to chaperone her so she gets to pick out her own outfit because her dad doesn’t care. She hates yellow and it’s the color we see her in the most. It’s not so simple as her abandoning her own unique style for a love interest approved one like so many makeover based romcoms. It’s more of a “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” style makeover than anything, a makeover based on taking control of your life.

She also does still incorporate some Featherington-isms in her developed style. You can see in some of the later styles she still has multiple bows in her hair, although they’re much smaller and flatter the overall style. She also still has a butterfly motif in some of her looks. Her dress silhouette is closer to Portia’s more body hugging cuts than it ever was before. And color wise Pen does wear Bridgerton Blue, but what people love is all the green, which is a mix of Bridgerton Blue and Featherington yellow, which represents both sides of the couple. And Colin gets in on the action here too, since the vest and cravat he wears to the court presentation are yellow and green.

It also seems like her wardrobe changes are mostly between her and Madame Delacroix in-universe. We know Penelope has strong fashion opinions even if she’s not allowed to express them to her mother in past seasons, so between Penelope finally speaking up for herself and having a fashion designer friend helping her, I don’t think it’ll come off as her changing just to make Colin happy in the show itself.

Thank you so much for this reply, it adds a ton of perspective for me!

She wears a lot of green which is a combination of Bridgerton blue and her signature yellow.

I feel like green is a nice in-between... I just worry it'll be TOO blue, like, Daphne-level blue. I LOVE her new hair, though.

I think Colin would agree with this bc I always felt that while she hated her yellows, he seemed to associate yellow with positivity, there are some nice little hints the show sprinkled in that lead me to believe that he would reassure her that he loves her yellow dresses. The problem was really the shade or the way they didn't fit her properly.

I hope one day she gets to wear them with happiness, not out of force/pressure from her mom.

P.S according to rumors from folks on the filming site, colin's wedding attire is in a slight cream / yellowish shade, and I find that beautiful if true. I like the idea of them adopting each other's colors, even the parts of each other that the other may have doubted

Colin’s bedspread was yellow in season 1, lol. He chooses the yellow mallet when they play pall mall.

They're being very on the nose with the Bridgerton Blue. I liked the use of colours and the thoughts behind it last season, but John Glazer lacks subtlety in his costuming
