I’m a 44 year old professional with a demanding job and 3 kids. I like video games but I don’t get very emotional about them.

Arthur Morgan is one of very, very few exceptions. He’s an exceptionally well-conceived and well-acted character, with an arc worthy of high-brow theatrical tragedy.

I can never get over what it means for him to begin openly challenging Dutch. It’s hard enough to admit you spent a decade+ being wrong in your loyalties. It’s harder when you are dying. You don’t want to admit that so much of your life was a lie. It takes immense courage. And with Arthur, it feels earned. It feels genuine.

Thats really nice to see, all the best for you and your kids.

I think I speak for a lot of people when I say this. When rumors came out that the main character of the game was not going to be John Marston, I was pretty upset. Because playing RDR, we all fell in love with John Marston. When the game started it didn't take long for me to enjoy Arthur Morgan. But what I was most excited about was that search party with Javier and Arthur looking for Marston. When I heard his voice for the first time yelling, I literally got goosebumps and I was so happy that John Marston was going to be at least in the game still

u/whiskey_bravo612 avatar

I felt exactly the same way. I didn’t think I’d ever love another cowboy like I love John Marston, but before the end of chapter 6, I was proven wrong.

This. Arthur's great, but John's the GOAT.

You mean Jim Milton? 😛

Before I played RDR2, I was disappointed that John wasn't the protagonist.

As I started playing RDR2, I grew to love Arthur.

Maybe around chapter 4 or so, I begrudgingly admitted that I liked Arthur more (which I didn't think possible).

Then in the Epilogue, Arthur's story made me appreciate John more, and I found a new love for John.

Incredible how the two characters feed into each other, strengthening and enriching each other.

Absolutely very true, Rockstar has a talent of making protagonists memorable with just one game per character, Arthur became a character so iconic with one game that most games can't manage even with sequels, I enjoyed playing RDR1 and GTA IV these past 3 months, Niko and John are awesome characters and you're given plenty of time to bond with them, expanding on that is what made Arthur so special, completely blew my mind how they developed this character and made the player immerse themselves in his story.

u/Overall_Ad2272 avatar

Yes, Rockstar makes a completely unknown upcoming Protagonists that nobody asked for and than it turns out to be a top tier character, for example, think of someone like kratos, the god of war series was evolved around kratos making Sequels and story lines just about him, but Arthur just Appears in one game and you can’t even play as him at the end of the game turns out to be the most Praised, loved and Respected protagonist of all time, rockstar’s cooking skills are just unmatched🔥

+1 for Nico Bellik, love that cat. Wish GTA 6 had gone the same route as GTA4 and RDR2 because I find the darker, more cynical or serious stories more compelling and memorable.

Though they should’ve left an option to untether honour from free mode cuz honestly it’s stifling to ALWAYS have to role play if you’re doing an honourable play through when the world still functions with and in some ways incentivises mayhem just like GTA.

It’s the character arc and story that makes this character so deep and rich. He’s a complicated dude, and complicated characters are interesting.

IMO of course! But I do agree that Arthur is one of the greatest video game characters out there. Any character that can make you feel emotions is…

I agree 100%. Arthur Morgan is not just a video game character. He's someone who is great at giving moral advice. I've never evolved with a character like that before. Hands down, R* did a superb job with the storyline of the game altogether.

The most loveable character I’ve ever played as by far! I felt the same way about John in one.. when I heard 2 was coming, to wait for years then finally discover Arthur absolutely blew me away. All these years later to still buzz out on a Sunday when I can do an all day with the gang.. Fuckin Masterpiece Baby!!!

The OST: "May I, stand unshaken" The playerbase; Comment Image

Arthur is the best part of the game imo

Pretty sure that would be Mario or Link. Sure they doesn’t have some fancy AAA level game or a epic story line, but they are both classic characters that the entire world know, recognize, and will live on in gaming history. Sure RDR2 is a great game, but it doesn’t have the legacy and character recognition of MANY other games. You can hate on metal gear, halo, and uncharted all you want. Realistically, they have characters that have a whole legacy behind them, and a MUCH larger fanbase than Arthur has. Go cosplay as Arthur at a comic or gaming convention, and people will probably think that you’re some generic cowboy. If anything, the 2 main characters that you could put out there from the RDR series that people would recognize would probably either be Dutch or John.

So was Arthur a good well written character in a good game. Sure, there’s no denying that. Best video game character ever? Well maybe as a one off character, sure why not. As a character that will go down in video game history. Yeah, I don’t think so. That’s just your nostalgia of the game over hyping him there.

There’s a lot of over hyping about Arthur.

That’s just your nostalgia of the game over hyping him there.

Sir Fuckwit; you are doing exactly that by saying "Mario or Link" are the best.

In reality; best is subjective when undefined, and you fell straight back upon nostalgia or culture/legacy.

One could argue the absolute saturation of lore and content in RDR2 regarding Arthur far outweighs the legacy of Mario or Link... but again.. best is subjective if undefined.

u/Overall_Ad2272 avatar

I won’t lie, my Brain cells started to get better after I read your comment

Thank fuck XD sharing objective reality is a risk these days; it seems like so many people are defined by their perspectives with little effort towards empathy.

u/Overall_Ad2272 avatar

Well I’m not one to talk complicated and fancy words but I Agree👍

Generic cowboy? Yeah let’s forget about the Thousands of people that cried {Spoiler} when Arthur died, they’ll probably forget about him in a few years and not getting Overly obsessed with him

Nostalgia is good but it won’t make everything better Automatically because you feel “nostalgic” You can enjoy the worst pieces of Fiction because of Nostalgia but that doesn’t make anything better really that just doesn’t make any sense you just make yourself look like an idiot,

Link and Mario is the most Iconic video games characters no question in that, but Beyond all of that.. nothing much is going with them really, Arthur just feels so.. human, saying he’s “JuSTT A GRAaT cHAracter” is an Insult to how good Arthur really is As a Character, Comparing him to someone like Dante form DMC, Dante is a Pretty good character and has some deep Elements about him, but not As deep As Arthur’s Character, Arthur for the first time in his life.. {Spoiler} feared death because TB, Arthur’s days on earth is pretty much Being counted, and the best thing he could ever do in this time is just.. trying to Redeem himself, doing good things Despite his bad deeds, TB made Arthur view life in a Different way.. a better way even, Arthur’s Entire life and view and his Morals Changed because he ruined one simple Family, the Downes Family And yet he eventually did or at least tried to make up for his past deeds, Arthur also Give another chance to John Marston. A chance for him to live a life away from the outlaw and Criminal life and live with his family, after that.. Arthur had to have a nice little chat with the a Certain rat knowing full well that his father figure, his leader has Betrayed him and now.. he had to take matters to his own hands

that is why ladies and gentlemen.. why Arthur Morgan is the greatest not video game Character, but the greatest Fictional character, I have ever seen, and about the whole hating. I love Metal gear with all of my heart, I got nothing Against Halo, the uncharted series is the best Video game series I have ever played.

You just need to come back to reality.

TLDR…..

I guess I hit a nerve with you when I GASP dared to disagree with your nostalgia filled memories. Welcome to the internet, not everyone is going to agree with you.

This game ruined my gaming experiences. This game has set the bar so high that whenever I play other games I start to get irritated and because its just not good.

Really? What makes him the best video game character ever? He's about as generic as michael in gta. He's just a gruff dude with good outdoor skills. There isn't really any crazy character development or anything that distinguishes him in anyway.

u/Overall_Ad2272 avatar

Than why not we hear your best video game protagonist in your opinion

u/Miner_Of_Minerals avatar

I'm asking you a question, im genuinely curious why you think that. I think he's pretty generic and too perfect with a tough guy personality. I don't know who's the greatest but i found John Marston in RDR much more interesting as a character. His look and voice were genuine and unique. I also liked how he wasn't completely self reliant and you didn't feel like the biggest, baddest, strongest guy in the room, you were just some random cowboy making his way.

Talking impact the best protagonist would have to be someone like Gordon Freeman or Master chief.

I did my part and said why Arthur is the best Protagonist in my own opinion, you can go and find it here Saying Michael or Arthur is “Generic” is not the best Statement to say when it comes to these Characters

u/Miner_Of_Minerals avatar

He sounds and looks like my brother in law, and he sounds and looks like a lot of those kind of guys. Theres hundreds of thousands of Arthurs out there. They literally chose the safest design and finished it by making a british guy give the most cliche gruff wild west accent. You can't get any more generic. I don't say that in a negative way either, he didn't need to be unique.

Michael, the bank robbing italian guy with a new york accent isn't generic? The guy that could have played a part in Heat? Really man?

The entire game start to finish shows his character development. That's pretty much the biggest part of the entire story.

u/Miner_Of_Minerals avatar

He's the same person the whole way then he gets sick. What are you on about.

The story consists of robberies and cliche western action set pieces. What's this story you're talking about?

u/BlxxdThrst avatar

He isn't though? Why do you think the game is called red dead REDEMPTION. It's a redemption story, same with John.

He goes from being a blindly loyal guy who follows Dutch and believes his lies to someone who sets his pride aside and admits he was wrong and that Dutch isn't the man he thought he was. He then stands against him to protect the other members in the gang and tries to do better for the people around him and right his wrongs. It might have taken him getting sick to do that but he still did it.

Without him doing that, the other gang members such as John, Abigail, Jack, Tilly, etc, would've had no chance at even a slightly better future then ending up attested or dead. Did you even play the game and listen to his dialogue with anyone, such as Mother Calderón for example? Or Dutch, himself? You see his character development plain as day, it's hardly subtle.

u/Miner_Of_Minerals avatar

Such character development. Much wow.

It's just a part of the cliche storyline, it's hardly character development to change his mind about someone and do the obvious thing, and I'm not saying having a generic storyline is bad, i don't play videogames for their storylines. Playing the main missions in RDR2 for me is progressing the chapter to unlock certain things.
