Queen Mary and King Frederik have arrived in Oslo, Norway for the second-half of their very first royal tour as monarchs.

The King of Denmark and his Australian-born wife were welcomed on Tuesday by King Harald V of Norway and his wife Queen Sonja, along with Crown Prince Haakon and his wife, Crown Princess Mette-Marit.

Mary and Frederik's arrival was especially poignant as it took place on their 20th wedding anniversary, with the Queen wearing a white jacket and fascinator on the occasion.

The Danish royal household shared a sweet shot of the couple aboard the royal yacht ahead of their arrival in Oslo, with the King and Queen nailing couple's dressing in matching jackets.

"In a few hours, the Royal Couple will arrive in Oslo and begin a state visit to Norway, after their Majesties sailed from Denmark yesterday with the Royal Ship Dannebrog," the caption read.

"The arrival to the Norwegian capital also happens on a very special day. It's the King and Queen's 20th wedding anniversary."

It's their first wedding anniversary since succeeding to their new roles of King and Queen in January.

Danish tradition dictates that the first official overseas royal tour of a reigning monarch and his spouse is done to their neighbouring countries, Norway and Sweden.

The couple met with Swedish royals, King Carl Gustaf, Queen Silvia, Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Carl Philip and his wife, Princess Sofia last week.

On their arrival in Oslo, Queen Mary and King Frederik mingled with the huge crowds waving Danish flags who had gathered to get a glimpse of them.

They then headed to an official reception and posed for photos, sharing a behind-the-scenes clip to social media.

"Thank you for the nice welcome, Norway," they said.

"Their Majesties the King and Queen earlier began the state visit to Norway at the Honnøbryggen in Oslo.

"The Norwegian Royal Family and a lot of citizens from both Norway and Denmark attended the reception."

King Frederik, 55, succeeded to the throne in January after his mother, Queen Margrethe, 84, abdicated after a 52-year reign due to health issues.

King Harald V of Norway, at 87, is Europe's oldest reigning monarch.

But in light of Margrethe's abdication, he announced he has no plans to step down.

However, the monarch has scaled back his official activities with Crown Prince Haakon stepping in more for his father.
