The penultimate episode of Blue Lights series two ended on another massive cliffhanger, leaving fans stressed and worried ahead of next week’s finale.

Warning, there are spoilers ahead if you haven’t seen series two, episode five of Blue Lights yet.

After the previous instalment of the hit BBC police drama saw Tommy (Nathan Braniff) bloody and unconscious on the nightclub floor after a brutal beating, episode five starts with news that he is going to be okay. Phew!

Annie (Katherine Devlin) confronts Canning (Desmond Eastwood) over the fact that he and Shane Bradley (Frank Blake) left Tommy on his own. When Canning tells Shane to “put a muzzle on her”, Annie wallops him in the face. While viewers cheer, McNally (Joanne Crawford) is fuming.

Despite all the team giving Canning the cold shoulder, Chief Nicola Robinson (Andrea Irvine) is happy with the intelligence work he has provided on Lee Thompson (Seamus O'Hara).

Tommy tells Sandra Cliff (Andi Osho) that he was attacked by Keith Wiley, and requests to see the footage of Gerry’s death. He says that one of the goons from that awful day was also in the club. Jonty (Jonathan Harden) tasks him with looking at all of their contacts with Lee Thompson over the last few weeks.

Meanwhile, Lee - who has been writing off people’s debts - tells Keith he has an hour to get out of town. While he’s waiting at the bus stop, Sandra nicks him (and gives him a firm kick in the delicates after he racially abuses her).

In the narrative’s other main thread, Jen Robinson (Hannah McClean) represents Robin Graham (Derek Thompson from Casualty) who is being charged under the official secrets act for “dissemination of stolen documents”. It soon turns out that Happy Kelly has been offered a ‘substantial settlement’ and Graham will be released without charge. In an emotional scene, Jen learns that Jen’s mum Nicola was very much involved in all of the business that went down at that time.

Meanwhile, Canning visits The Royal Pub to see Lee. He basically tells him he’ll leave him alone if he maintains the “peace and quiet,” that he likes. Shane, seriously unimpressed, walks out as Canning and Lee shake hands.

Back at the station, McNally tells Canning not to pursue his complaint against Annie, as Shane has provided a witness account of the misogynistic thing he said about her. Canning makes it clear that he is done with Shane.

After Grace (Siân Brooke) and Stevie (Martin McCann) pick up the doorbell camera footage from a few weeks ago, they are driving through the streets when Lee’s nephew, left home alone, finds his uncle's gun and, while mucking about, shoots it out of the window. A bullet shatters the back window of Grace and Stevie’s police car. The car slowly comes to a halt by the side of the road, but we don’t see what has become of either Stevie or Grace.

The credits then role.

Fans took to social media to react to the shocking ending. One wrote: “Good grief!! This TV show will put me in the grave.”

Someone else said: “Just watched  #BlueLights. What a cliffhanger. Now I’ll have to hold my breath for a week.”

One viewer wrote: “Not Stevie and Grace😱 #BlueLights They better be getting out of the car next week. Please don't let them face the same fate as Gerry.🥺🥺”

Another wrote: “Brilliant episode with so many stand out moments and then THAT ending 😱”

Blue Lights series two concludes on BBC One at 9pm on Monday 20th May. All episodes are now available on BBC iPlayer.
