Four Qualify for NCAA Division I East First Round

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | Four Alabama A&M University outdoor track and field student-athletes have qualified for the NCAA Division East First Round, May 22-25, at the Jim Green Track and Field Center, hosted by the University of Kentucky.
 
On the women's side, Ana-Liese Torian is 31st in the 100m hurdles, while Briana Cox is 64th in the hammer throw. Justin Walker qualified 51st in the long jump and Brandon McLaren will be competing in three events, the long jump (52nd), javelin (94th) and decathlon (26th).
 
Torian, who ran 13.45 on Friday to qualify for the finals in the 100m hurdles, won the event on Saturday in 13.47.
 
Torian qualified for the 100m hurdles after her performance at the Music City Challenge where she ran a program-best 12.99. At the SWAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Torian qualified for the finals at 13.45 and won the event at 13.47.
 
Cox, who broke her own school record in the hammer throw numerous times, qualified for the NCAA Division I East First Round with a SWAC record at the conference outdoor track and field championships.
 
At the SWAC Championships, the Miami, Fla. native recorded a foul on her first attempt and then broke her school mark with a toss of 54.55m in the second attempt. However, on the third toss of the day, Cox, who ranks 64th in the nation, shattered all previous records, throwing a personal and school record mark of 56.72m to win the event. In addition, she broke Faith Estelle's SWAC mark of 56.50m, which was set on May 3, 2019.
 
Walker, a native of Smyrna, Ga., qualified for the regionals with a mark of 7.53m at the Music City Challenge on April 26, while McLaren was right behind him at 7.52m, also at the Music City Challenge.
 
McLaren broke a 36-year-old SWAC record at the conference championships in the decathlon as he finished with 6,937 points, breaking the previous mark of 6,776 points set by Wesley Francis, of Grambling State, in 1988. The Hanover, Jamaica not only broke the conference record, but the school mark, previously held by Nathan Stephens (6,321 points) in 2010.
 
In the javelin, McLaren, who is 94th nationally, won the conference championship with a personal-best throw of 59.06m.
 
Fans will have the opportunity to watch all four days of action on ESPN+. The final 12 in each event will advance to the NCAA Division I Track & Field Championships June 5-8 at the Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. This will mark the 15th time the outdoor championships have been held in Oregon and the first since 2022.
