About this product

Product Information

An innovative adaptation of Ursula K. Le Guin's futuristic science-fiction masterpiece about a man named George Orr with the incredible power to literally make his dreams come true. The unpredictability of this "gift" is a serious hindrance on George's life, leading to his grave desire to be rid of it. However, his psychiatrist Dr. Haber has different plans for George's powers and hypnotically convinces him to use this gift for the benefit of mankind. Although the doctor may have good intentions, messing with George's mind can lead to horrifying consequences. Starring James Caan, Lukas Haas, Lisa Bonet and David Strathairn.

Not your run of the mill Sci-Fi

I still prefer the original 1980 version, but I am definitely biased as I spent years searching for it. This version certainly has higher production value and more seasoned actors, but the details are just different enough to be slightly off-putting for me. Still, this is well worth your time if you are a fan of stories that stimulate your mind more than your eyes.

  • Lathe of Heaven

Lathe of Heaven, a movie made for A&E TV is interesting enough in a gimmicky sort of way. The idea that one human has power to change the world's landscaping during controlled dreamscapes is akin to the poor man's plan for retirement (gambling) but in this world it actually works for a time to benefit one selfish therapist (James Caan) who possesses an inherent God complex. That one man (and notice that I said man with no intention of revering any doctor in possession of a certificate that denotes he or she knows best) discovers that he can use his patient to depopulate the world as he sees fit as well as gain material success exponentially as he literally enslaves the patient (Lukas Haas) who before his eventual epiphany unwittingly continues to do his bidding. And of course, ...

  • Interesting Film With Heavey Science Yet Fail to Stun!

The words spoken at the beginning and end of the film: "The mind, that ocean where each kind does straight its own resemblance find. Yet it creates, transcending these, far other worlds, in other seas" are from Andrew Marvell's beautiful 72-line poem "The Garden", published in 1681. Not to be super critical here about the film, however, the simple tone and flow of the film was much to calm. The tempo of the film quite slow and hard to determine what was actually going on. James Caan was playing so far off the cuff that he didn't even have his usual determined charisma. It was pretty blase' acting which didn't seem to get better regardless of any new outcomes. I caught myself falling asleep twice in the film so I decided that it indeed needs to be on TV with commercials to keep you ...

  • Lethe of Heaven (DVD, 2002, International Version)

I bought this DVD to add to my collection of science fiction. Purchasing DVDs on eBay is a better value then trying to find hard-to-get videos in second hand video shops since you save on the gas and time it takes to get around. I believe there was a BBC version of Lethe of Heaven that came out on PBS many years also. This DVD runs about 104 minutes and gets through the story faster than BBC version that took a longer time to view.

  • A great classic early 2000s Millennium era movie!

This movie a great remake and has that captivating warm and wide eyed adventure of the awesome great movies of the late 90s and early 2000s. It has great looking actors and awesome story with the dramatization style of the movies from that fun innocent bygone era. It fits in perfectly with movies from its time like A Walk To Remember, What Dreams May Come, 13 Going On 30, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Go, Freddy vs Jason, Freddy vs Jason and Spider Man. It has that late 90s Early 2000s feel at any moment you feel like Rob Thomas, Matchbox 20, Enrique Iglesias, NSync, Backstreet Boys, Ricky Martin, Shania Twain, Bon Jovi and Christina Aguilera are going to pop up in the movie. It's a lot different than the original version but a lot more fun to watch also!
