The Grammy-winning RandB icon, who embarks on her residency with Cedric the Entertainer, shares her journey with lupus, health challenges and determination to perform.

AceShowbiz - Toni Braxton, a 56-year-old Grammy-winning R&B icon, is facing her health challenges head-on as she embarks on her “Love & Laughter” residency with Cedric the Entertainer in Las Vegas. Diagnosed with lupus in 2008, Braxton has been taking precautions and managing her health to ensure she can perform.

"I've been feeling OK," Braxton tells PEOPLE. "My doctor said I'm ready to go." Fatigue is a common symptom of lupus, which affects multiple organs and tissues. Despite her condition, Braxton is determined to pace herself and take breaks when needed. "Sometimes it's hard to do that," she says. "I just know to pace it and then everything's fine."

The residency, which launched on April 27 and continues through July, is a throwback to variety programs. "They're going to see a show like Sonny and Cher," Braxton says.

Braxton's lupus diagnosis journey was long and difficult. Despite experiencing symptoms, she initially hid her condition out of shame and fear of losing work. "People get scared around sick celebrities," she says. It took 10 years for Braxton to receive an official diagnosis, leaving her feeling like a "hypochondriac."

Now, Braxton is using her platform to advocate for lupus awareness. "There's nothing to be ashamed of," she says. "Nothing."

Cedric the Entertainer, who also has a personal connection to lupus, has been a source of support for Braxton during her residency. "I just reassured Toni like, 'Look, I got your back,' " says the comedian.
