Trapis Appreciation Post (very mild spoilers all books)

Discussion

I've been lurking around this sub for a few months now and have sadly not seen a single mention of Trapis! He is maybe the bravest, certainly the most altruistic character we've met. Idk about the Amyr, the Sithe, Chandrian, whom or whatever but whatever side Trapis is on is the one I'm rooting for. Although I bet he's an Amyr in hiding. His amazingness came through more clearly on my subsequent re-reads--the first one I was so disoriented as no one had prepared me for literally any of what happens in the first 100 pages (it's like Harry Potter they said...).

The idea of an individual in any society, especially the generally feudal/medieval fantasy world built in the books, who dedicates their energy and life to some of the most ignored, marginalized, and vulnerable children in it...and is doing it because he truly seems to care, is astounding. Not only is Trapis giving his meager resources to an endless stream of hungry bellies, but he is going against the grain by not exploiting or commodifying any of the children, even the ones like Kvothe who could be used on the streets pretty easily. Surely local gangsters have threatened him in the past ("Oi! Stop giving those kids bread or else they won't work for us no more!") And given what Kvothe experienced before and in Tarbean, I think we can fairly assume he's telling the truth about Trapis being honorable and just a tremendous person. Especially when you compare the heavenly refuge of Trapis to the (supposed) hell of Haven we get a few glimpses of later on, he really sticks out.

Anyone else really into this character? I hope he reappears, along with several other characters from Tarbean of course.

I think Rothfuss is tricky. I think a lot of the 'nice' characters are actually bad guys. I think a lot of people trick Kvothe and the readers. And TRAPIS is an anagram for RAPIST.

Despite all of that... there is no way Trapis is a bad guy.

Yikes, hadn't realized the anagram.

Double Tinfoil theory: Trapis is actually the Duke of Gibea, and the Duke wasn't actually killing anyone, he was just the only one willing to take in all of the sick and poor. It's probably a better story if Trapis is just a normal dude though.

Wasn't that 400 years ago, though?

Probably. Maybe.
