The back cover of the second disc of the Sylvie Carbonel anthology may be sloppy (forgetting the colon, quotation marks for useless seconds, sometimes forgotten or of changing color, unnecessary focus on “collection”…), echoing the first where the the accent on “Desbrière” and, incidentally, the name of the performer, the program of the disc is refined.

firstly because it presents pieces by Emmanuel Chabrier, certainly not unknown but rarely given in concert;

then because he adds eleven miniatures by Jacques Desbrière which, for this reason, is even more rarely programmed;

finally because it brings together two cycles of miniatures, questioning their common points and their dissonances.

Housed under a generic title suggesting a collection of album sheets, Jacques Desbrière’s Cahier de musique – which will interest us here – is no less logically arranged. The “Prélude” swings with rigor, and the breaths spared by the composer.

until the suspension of the coda. The “Ballade” adorns the soprano melody with a rich and nicely structured harmonization. Despite its conventional clarity, the ABA form offers an attractive mix

of melancholy,

emergency and
of mystery
whose charm and roughness are conveyed by Sylvie Carbonel with seductive rigor.
