His father was the head of maintenance at the club. In 1999, his father started working as a day laborer on a construction project that was building the Junior Tennis Champions Center (JTCC) in College Park, Maryland. When the building was finished, he was recruited as the on-site custodian and given a spare office to reside in at the center. For the following 11 years, the Tiafoe brothers spent five days each week at the facility with their father. They took advantage of their living environment and began playing tennis frequently at the age of four. They remained with their mother while she wasn’t working night shifts as a nurse.

When Tiafoe and his brother were five years old, their father arranged for them to begin training at the JTCC without paying their regular tuition. Misha Kouznetsov started teaching Tiafoe at the center when he was eight years old, impressed by his work ethic and enthusiasm for the sport. As Tiafoe advanced through the junior ranks, Kouznetsov assisted in sponsoring his tournament participation. He continued to train Tiafoe for nine years before moving to the USTA National Training Center in Boca Raton, Florida. Franklin, Tiafoe’s brother, remained in Maryland and attended DeMatha Catholic High School before going on to play collegiate tennis at Salisbury University.
