Vote: Des Moines Register Iowa Ortho Athletes of the Week for May 13-19

Last week saw the 2024 Iowa high school state track and field meet take place at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.

There were 46 state records set during the three days of competition. The records were evenly split, with the girls and boys breaking 23 records apiece.

Last week was also the opening week for high school baseball in Iowa. Soccer teams from across the state began postseason competition and the state qualifiers in girls and boys golf were determined.

Here are the Des Moines Register's Iowa Ortho female and male Athlete of the Week candidates for the week of May 13-19. Register readers vote to determine the winners, who will be announced at the end of the week.

Girls

Hannah Longmire, Iowa City West

Ambulatory events were new to the Iowa high school state track and field meet in 2024, and Iowa City West's Hannah Longmire won three of them.

Longmire took first in the 100-meter dash with a time of 15.83 seconds. She was also first in the 200 (32.67) and 400 (1:17.01).

Addison Dorenkamp, West Des Moines Valley

Dorenkamp won both the Class 4A 3,000 and 1,500 at the state track and field meet.

Dorenkamp's 1,500 time of 4:25.32 set a new state record. The old mark of 4:27.76 was set by Linn-Mar's Stephanie Jenks in 2015.

Dorenkamp won the 3,000 in 9:30.64. She finished nearly 31 seconds ahead of the rest of the 4A field.

Reese Brownlee, Clear Lake

Brownlee set state records in both the 3A girls long jump and 400 hurdles at the state track and field meet.

Brownlee's record jump in the long jump was 19 feet, 3 inches. She won the 400 hurdles in 59.83.

Brownlee also took first in the 3A girls open 400 after crossing the finish line in 55.56.

Jaidyn Sellers, Panorama

Sellers wrapped up her outstanding track and field career at Panorama by winning gold medals in the 1A 100, 200 and 400.

Sellers set 1A records in the 100 and 400 with respective times of 12.05 and 55.44. She won the 200 in 25.09.

Sellers won both the 100 and 200 at state in each of her four seasons running track.

Meredith Van Wyk, Pella Christian

Van Wyk helped Pella Christian 2A state records in the sprint medley, 4x200 and 4x400 relays at the state track and field meet.

Pella Christian won the sprint medley in 1:46.05, the 4x200 in 1:39.72 and the 4x400 in 3:56.61. Pella Christian set the 2A 4x400 record during the prelims with a time of 3:55.22.

Van Wyk also claimed an individual state title in the 2A 200 with a time of 25.24.

Boys

Brevin Doll, Adel-Desoto-Minburn

Doll won the 3A boys 100 and 200 and helped ADM take first in the 4x100 and 4x200 relays during the state track and field meet.

Doll set a 3A state record in the 100 and 200 prelims with respective times of 10.40 and 21.10. He won the finals of both races in 10.82 and 21.50, respectively.

Doll helped ADM set all-time state records in the 4x100 prelims and 4x200 finals with respective times of 41.33 and 1:25.55. The Tigers took second in the 4x100 finals with a time of 41.90.

Ethan Kelly, Waukon

Kelly won three events in the inaugural boys Ambulatory competition at the state track and field meet.

Kelly won two events on the track and one in the field. He was first in the 100 (13.86), 200 (28.29) and shot put (38-10).

Jaden Damiano, Iowa Falls-Alden

Damiano won the 2A open 100 and 400 hurdles and helped Iowa Falls-Alden win the shuttle hurdle relay in a 2A-record time during the state track and field meet.

Damiano won the 100 in 11.06 and the 400 hurdles in 52.03. He anchored IFA to a 2A-record time of 58.70 in the finals after the Cadets originally set the mark in the prelims at 58.85.

Quentin Nauman, Western Dubuque

Nauman won four events in the 3A boys competition at the state track and field meet.

Nauman took first in the 3A boys 800, 1,600 and 3,200 in respective times of 1:51.60, 4:12.80 and 8:54.11. His 800 time is a new 3A record.

Nauman also anchored Western Dubuque to a state title in the 3A distance medley relay with a time of 3:28.17.

Maddox O'Connor, Southeast Polk

O'Connor had a big night driving in runs for the Southeast Polk baseball team during a doubleheader at Ames on Friday.

O'Connor went 3-for-5 with two doubles and seven RBIs in a 12-2 victory over the Little Cyclones, and he also drove in two runs during the other Ram victory over the doubleheader, a 14-0 triumph.
