What does the joke "stealing a kiss is petting larceny" mean?

It's from the show Our Miss Brooks. It came out in 1955 so I might be too young too understand it.

In the show the man accused her of stealing, but clarified that she stole a kiss from him. She goes, I didn't steal a kiss that was petting larceny. The guy didn't understand it and she said you'll get it when you're older. I assume a sexual innuendo based off that last line.

Petty larceny is stealing.

Petting is kissing while groping.

It's a play on words.

Oh I've never heard petting used that way. Makes sense now.

FYI it's petit larceny, not petty larceny...unless the larceny involved some silly drama haha
