Penn State softball won its first NCAA Tournament game in 13 years.

If it could only have figured out a way to solve an opponent named Texas State ...

The Nittany Lions defeated Albany early Saturday evening in the losers bracket of the NCAA softball Bryan-College Station Regional behind star freshman pitcher Bridget Nemeth − the program's first NCAA Tournament victory since the 2011 season.

But the Lions fell apart late in losing the nightcap to Texas State, 8-4, and bowed out of the postseason. The defeat was the second in two days to the Bobcats and fifth overall this season (The Lions lost a three-game series at Texas State in March).

Nemeth, which earned the decision in all three NCAA regional games, finished her first college season with a school-record 23 victories. She lost her team's final game of the season after the Lions couldn't hold a late 3-2 lead Saturday night − a lead thanks to freshman Audree Mendoza's dramatic three-run home run, the first of her career.

Penn State completed its 2024 campaign with a 35-20 overall record, tying the third-most wins in a single season in program history set by the 1999 team.
