The Mortal Kombat movie sequel has finally gotten a release date. After first getting announced in January 2022, it's been confirmed that the new film will be hitting theaters next fall.

Per Variety, Mortal Kombat 2 will premiere in theaters, which includes an IMAX release, on Oct. 24, 2025. Unlike the previous movie, which was released during the pandemic era in 2021, Mortal Kombat 2 will be screening exclusively in theaters. The first film had a day-and-date release, dropping simultaneously on Max (then HBO Max), where it became the most-streamed film on the year on the platform. Filming on Mortal Kombat 2 was wrapped in January, but all the while, no release date had been announced until now.

Lewis Tan previously teased how the sequel would be "way bigger" than the 2021 film. In a 2022 interview with ComicBook.com, he pointed to how the first Mortal Kombat was such a big success on streaming, leaving Warner Bros. execs happy with the results. The film has the record for the biggest movie premiere on Max, so it will be interesting to see how well the sequel does exclusively in theaters. Tan also teased the involvement of Ed Boon, who created the original franchise-spawning video game with John Tobias.

"They're very happy with the movie, and obviously, it performed really well. It's one of the most-viewed films of their Warner Bros. slate, even though it came out at the worst time ever possible," he said. "But no, we're full steam ahead. And now, we have Ed Boon with us as well, so we got the stamp of approval from the legend himself. #2 is just going to be absolutely insane. Way bigger."
