Air Vice-Marshal Tony Davies appointed NZ's Chief of Defence Force

Judith Collins, the Defence Minister of New Zealand, has announced the appointment of Air Vice-Marshal Tony Davies MNZM as the new Chief of Defence Force. The Chief of Defence Force oversees the command of the Navy, Army, and Air Force, serving as the primary military advisor to the Defence Minister and other relevant government officials.

Air Vice-Marshal Davies, who is set to be promoted to Air Marshal, brings a wealth of experience to the role. He has been serving as the Vice Chief of Defence Force since 2018 and has been with the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) since 1984. Notably, in 1999, he was honored as a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit following his leadership on a critical medical rescue mission in Antarctica.

Defence Minister Collins praised Davies, noting his exemplary leadership and extensive experience. She expressed confidence in his ability to lead the defence forces with integrity and a firm commitment to protecting New Zealand’s interests. Collins also acknowledged the contributions of the outgoing Chief of Defence Force, Air Marshal Kevin Short, thanking him for his service.

Davies' career has been marked by significant leadership roles, including his time as Chief of Air Force from 2016 to 2018 and various other strategic positions within the NZDF. His educational background includes studies at prestigious institutions such as the Royal College of Defence Studies in London, the United States Air Force Air University in Alabama, and the Asia Pacific Centre for Strategic Studies in Hawaii.

Air Vice-Marshal Davies is set to officially begin his new role as Chief of Defence Force on June 6, when he will also receive his promotion to Air Marshal. His appointment is for a three-year term.
